GA Constitution of 1777
Was adopted shortly after the Declaration of
Independence
Created a unicameral legislature
Created separate legislative, executive, and
judicial branches (separation of power; good)
However, the 3 branches were not of equal
power
The Constitution created 8 counties each with
its own courthouses
Weaknesses of the Constitution
Problems:
Governor served one term only and was
appointed by the legislature
legislature appointed judges
all the power really rested in the legislature

Difficulties for Georgia after Revolutionary
War:
Economy Ruined
People divided
Government had to provide food until crops could
be planted
Had to provide those who served in the war with
land as promised
Owed federal government money to pay for the
war

Changes in Georgias Constitution
1785 State capitol moved from Savannah to
Augusta
1788 & 1789 Delegates met in capitol to
discuss changes needed in state constitution
To ensure balance of powers spread power
amongst the
Executive Branch
Legislative Branch
Judicial Branch
Georgias Legislature after 1789
General Assembly
Bicameral: members were elected by
popular vote
Senate & House of Representatives
Legislators elected governor, other
state officials and judges
Decided how money was to be raised
(taxes) and how it was to be spent.
