Vision: Remembering, Recasting, & Reclaiming
October 19th, 5-7 PM

Grace and peace to you in Christ, St. Paul Family!

Allow me to share a few important words today about vision, courtesy of church analyst George Barna:

Vision is the ability to understand the history, the present condition, and the potential of the church, and
to conceive a plan for action that will maximize the ministry potential. More often than not, vision is a
result of having spent much time absorbing the facts about the community, knowing the resources upon
which the church can call (people, funding, facilities, equipment, etc.), and devising sound but creative
strategies for moving forward. Vision always entails progress: it is never satisfied with the status quo.

More and more lately, people have been asking me, So where are we going as a church and school,
pastor? Whats ahead? What is your wait for it vision? My answer usually engenders both hope
and disappointment. Hope because I tell them that in the two months (did I say two months?) Ive
been here, Ive spent literally every day on the visioning task; disappointment because while everyone
wants a clear, catchy, quotable piece of verbiage from me that lights the way toward greatness, right
now the process of visioning means slogging through all the unglamorous, unexciting stuff that the
George Barna quote mentions above. Theres no quick path to a preferred future, and quite frankly,
there has been much to work through here at St. Paul that has required a great deal of information-
gathering and assessment on my part as your new pastor. I get it: it sounds boring and unengaging.

Yet be encouraged! There are important, and yes, very engaging things on the horizon for us here at
St. Paul. Weve been praying and working very hard to bring together all that is necessary to reaffirm
and recast a God-given vision for the body of Christ in this place.

And so as you read this letter from me today, please do something extremely important and of
far-reaching significance: stop, grab your calendar, and ink in Sunday, October 19th, 5-7 PM.

This date, just a hair more than two weeks from now, will serve as a marked moment for us as a church
and school family. Its an evening where we will begin to look at our future together as Gods people in
this wonderful place we call St. Paul. It will be a night, in many ways, of beginning to share vision for
our future. I not only invite, but lovingly call on you, to come and be part of this event. Childcare will be
provided, coffee and goodies will be served, and we will respect your time with a precise start at 5 and a
hard stop at 7. On this night you will be comforted and encouraged in your heart and challenged in
your faith, and I am confident that by Gods grace you will come away refreshed and excited about our
life together as Gods people here.

You are dear to me, folks. I continue to rejoice in this people and in this place. Im still getting to know
everyone, still learning your stories, and yes, still learning and relearning! names! Thank you for
your patience. Thank you, more than anything, for hearts that look forward to what God, by His
gracious power and provision, will do among us in this ministry.

Joy to you!
Pastor Stark

Brothers and sisters in Christ,
September was a busy month for your St. Paul staff and congregational leaders. While focusing on
our 2014-15 current needs and concerns, we are planning for 2015-16 and beyond.
At our June 22 congregation meeting, I asked you to pass the proposed budget with a promise to
provide a financial update within 120 days. Thanks for your patience you will receive that update
on Sunday, October 19 (5:00-7:00 P.M.), combined with a Pastor Stark conversation and steward-
ship plans. (Incidentally, October 19 is 118 days since June 22 just under the wire!)
Some current updates:
LCEF (Lutheran Church Extension Fund), our mortgage lender, has approved our request for in-
terest-only payments from this October through December, 2014

School Enrichment Fund - Curriculum support, technology upgrades, and marketing continue to
be supported by your gifts at this time. We are close to filling the marketing position for our
school (and congregation). The costs of this position will be covered with funds already re-
ceived and restricted for the School Enrichment Fund.

Vision for St. Paul we are doing our initial groundwork for participating in a Vision Path pro-
cess through Lutheran Church Extension Fund. All of us in our congregation will have an op-
portunity to be a part of planning our future mission and ministry efforts. We will provide
additional information regarding our November 15 Vision Path report from our consultant.
The next several months are extremely significant for our future at St. Paul. Please continue to
support one another with prayer support and love as we discover what God has in mind for us.
God bless.

A Sea of Yellow
Our sea of yellow kept flowing this year at Lake McIntosh at the recent Peachtree City Dragon Boat
Race. As I write this article, I am filled with pride for this years Dragon Boat Team and the number of
folks who came out to support them.
Race day dawned overcast and cool. Jim Bode, Daniel, Gordon, Becky Dingler, Kathy Savage, Gary
and I met at the church at odark-thirty to load up. Shelby met us there to help unload and there was a
lot to unload! Coolers filled with ice for drinks, tables, chairs, church and school literature, decorations.
Volunteers began to show up and in just a few minutes the St. Paul tent was the best dressed on the field.
Our first race was at 9:36 an odd time. So before the opening ceremony was over team members had to
race over to the starting point and very soon were in the boat. Members of this years team were: Captain,
Joel Dietrich; drummer, Mark Abresch; Kiara Denholm; Jared Poole; Daniel DeHoyos; Susan Esparza; Jill
and Brandon Cline; Greg Bickhart; Shelby Harwell; and Buddy Collins. Our race was against Christ Our
Shepherd Holy Rowers and we raced with all our strength and heart. Then we had almost 4 hours before
our next race. But things were happening at our tent Polka Dot (Blake Hall) made a big splash; volun-
teers gave out frog stickers, frog tattoos, church and school literature and talked to people in the crowd
about St. Paul Lutheran Church and School. A BIG thank you to all of you volunteers! And a big thank you
to George Martin who was our liaison between us and the Rotary Club. And finally a financial thank you to
our sponsors: Thrivent, St. Paul Outreach, and you , the members of St. Paul Lutheran Church. With the
help of all of these folks, there were smiles and laughter everywhere.
And when the time came, everyone stopped what they were doing and hurried to the shoreline to
watch our team race for our second heat. We put up a great showing against a professional team that
races many times a year throughout the country. Everyone knew that St. Paul was there. The energy was
awesome! Of course, we could be heard cheering and we were seen our bright yellow shirts were per-
fect and there was a sea of yellow up and down the shoreline. So, thank you St. Paul Lutheran Church and
School for making our second year at the Peachtree City Dragon Boat Race a huge success. And now there
is talk of adding a second boat next year! So, if you want to be in the boat(s), let me know because mem-
bers of the first boat may not want to give up their paddles and seats on the second boat are filling up
fast!

Fall is my favorite time of the year. It is a combination of many things that I
like. The nice weather; where its warm enough to enjoy outside without the
humidity and heat. The changing colors; I love the reds and oranges that add
amazing color to the world for a short time. Sports; if you love sports, this is
the best time of year - Football is in full gear, baseball is heading into the
playoffs, and basketball is starting. (No one knows when Hockey starts or
stops, lets assume Hockey is going on too) Of course we must mention the
food. While we eat to survive all year round, fall ushers in a season of eating
that is unlike the rest of the year. It all starts with the loads of candy we
consume for Halloween. Add to that pumpkin pie, pumpkin lattes, pumpkin
donuts, and even pumpkin beer. Fall is a great time to be alive.

Fall is the season of change. When it comes to leaves and weather we all love change. But when it
comes to other areas in our life, change can be a four letter word.

St. Paul is entering a season of change. We have recently completed the season of transition and
now that all the pieces are in place things will be a little bit different.

Worship might be a little bit different youth ministry might be a little bit different children and
family ministry might be a little bit different adult discipleship might be a little bit different. But just
like the change in seasons, this change can be a wonderful time.

The cooler weather of fall is refreshing after a long, hot summer. The colorful leaves are pleasing to
the eyes. The delicious food is bountiful. After a long season of transition this time with our new
pastor and new leadership can be refreshing. We are blessed with Gods endless bounty.

I pray that you will embrace this season of change in our church. God was clearly with us through
the transition and God will remain with us now. Enjoy the newness that comes with new leaders and
a new pastor. May your soul be refreshed.

have seen titles such as, Suspension, Domestic Violence, and Performance Enhancement Drug Scandal.
An entire generation of professional sports is stained with off the field issues. A life filled with shallow
character is coming to fruition in the lives of professional athletes in the form of bans and suspensions.
We see these individuals and believe they are the definition of success; they could to nothing more to
become more successful. Yet, their lack of good character has drastically affected their success in the
long term. Therefore, I ask the question. Does an individuals character affect their success in the long
term? A false witness will perish, but the word of a man who hears will endure. (Proverbs 21:28) Now,
judging by standard the wisest man whom every lived, character WILL affect your success in the long
term. I would push it even further to say that CHARACTER and SUCCESS are the same. Poor character
will ultimately lead to an unsuccessful life and quality character will lead to a successful one. This is the
focus of student ministry here at St. Paul. How are you developing quality character in the live of people
around you, in your children, or in yourself? As followers of Christ, how are you developing character that
is Gospel centered and focused on Christ?"

TRUNK OR TREAT...Friday, OCTOBER 31st, 6-8pm
So, right now it still feels like summer time, but fall is here. Can you believe that?? Its October and that makes me think of
Fall Festivals, trick-or-treat, and of course candy!!! Lots of candy!! Of course I think of hay bales, cornstalks, scarecrows
and pumpkins, too great big ones, little bitty ones, fat ones and tall skinny ones. My grandchildren love to carve their
Halloween pumpkins by themselves! I dont dare touch that carving thingy that comes with the pumpkin decorating kits.
They can do it all by themselves. And they are very creative! And my grandchildren and their parents make it a family af-
fair they spend an evening letting their imagination run wild. Mom and dad carve a pumpkin, too. So when you pull into
their driveway, you see the fruits of their labor sitting on their front steps.
Generally speaking, if you provide an activity that is a slam-dunk at pleasing kids, youll have NO problem getting parents
to bring their kids. Theres no time in the fall that is MORE pleasing to kids than Halloween.
Do you remember the first time you experienced Halloween as a kid? Jerry Seinfeld puts it best, Hold on, the WHOLE
neighborhood is just giving out candy? Ive got to be a part of this wonderful event, Ill do anything, pleaseI can wear
that!
On Halloween night, St. Paul Lutheran Church and School will transform our upper parking lot into a circle of fun for both
parents and children with Trunk or Treat. We want to invite school families, church families and our friends and neighbors.
We know that on Halloween night, our parking lot is always filled with cars - families are right here in our backyard. They
park their car here so why not invite them to stop by for Trunk or Treat. We know that there are also many families who
may think of us when they do decide to try church or to give this God thing another look. We can only be faithful to plant
seeds and water them in as many ways as we can, and we trust God for the increase.
We need YOU for our trunk or treat to be successful. We need trunks! You are encouraged to be creative and decorate
your trunk, the bed of your truck, or YOUR GOLF CART in some crazy way. If you Google Trunk or Treat youll see pirate
ships, Star Wars themes, construction themes, Jaws themes, Disney movie themes like Frozen. The thing to remember is
that the FREE candy in decorated trunks is the MAIN attraction. And as a little extra incentive, we will have a best trunk
award to start a new tradition at St. Paul.
So, check out the Trunk or Treat ideas online and let an Outreach Committee member know your theme. Remember to be
creative, use items that you have on hand to decorate your trunk or golf cart and have fun! See Billie or Gary Nichols,
Becky Dingler, Kathy Savage or Sarah Miller. We need your commitment by Wednesday, October 15
th
. And every-
one can help by picking up an extra bag or two of candy when youre at the store.
Lets make this even more fun with a little friendly competition for the best trunk award. Talk to the people in your small
group; teachers, get your kids involved and come up with a theme for your class; middle and high school groups, you dont
want to be left out of the fun.
Make a commitment, design your trunk and lets have fun on Halloween night from 6:00 8:00 pm. And by
the way, thats Friday, October 31

Outreach Report

Our St. Pauliwogs are coming back! In spite of a change in venue this year, last minute practice notices by the
Rotary Club that affected the make-up up of our team, and challenges in the budget, the St. Pauliwogs re-
main strong and undaunted. Our co-winners for this years t-shirt design are Leah Ross and Hunter Pickett.
Entries submitted by Guthrie Preble, Emma Kennedy, Sarah Clare Langford and Annabelle Cooper received
Honorable Mention. Our judges, Linda Stark and Jim Bode, had a tough time choosing just the two co-winners
of the art submitted for our contest. Leah and Hunter will receive an ice cream or pizza party their choice
for their entire class. Billie and Gary attended chapel on September 3
rd
, 10
th
and 24
th
to get students excited
about the Dragon Boat Race. Everyone board members, staff, congregation, teachers, students and par-
ents and grandparents were encouraged to purchase a t-shirt and wear it on race day to show our support
for our team! The race is Saturday, Saturday, September 27
th.
. Our co-captains this year are Jim Richards
and Joel Dietrich and Mark Abresch returns as our drummer. Team members attended trainings on Sunday,
September 7
th
and 14
th
. Newcomers to the team this year are Shelby Harwell, Jared Poole, Susan Esparza
and Greg Bickhart. The Dragon Boat Race is a fun outreach event for everyone, and we hope everyone will
support us as we paddle to success!

On Tuesday September 9th, Chef Matt Preble prepared breakfast for the teachers and staff at Crabapple Lane
Elementary School. Billie and Gary Nichols along with Pastor Stark, Kathy Savage and Congregation President
Gordon Stuckert helped serve breakfast goodies. It was great to meet and greet our neighbors at CLES! This
outreach project is just one part of building bridges to our community with our partner, Lutheran Hour Minis-
tries (Outreach Initiative).

Other projects that Outreach is working on are Operation Christmas Child, Blessing of the Animals; Teacher
Breakfasts at St. Paul Lutheran School, Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat. For this new addition to our St. Paul
Community Outreach program to be a success, we will need a commitment of at least 12 people who will be
willing to decorate the trunk of their car, bed of their truck or their golf cart. Commitments must be made by
Wednesday, October 15
th
. Plans are to have a hot dog supper and costume contest for both adults and chil-
dren. We are looking at the possibility of prizes for the best childrens costume, best adult costume and best
decorated vehicle.

So, as you can see our God Rewards Our Work (G.R.O.W.) Ministry is really growing!!! But in order for
our Outreach Initiative to continue to be successful we need each of you to become involved. I encourage
you to find an opportunity to help us reach others in Peachtree City and surrounding communities. Thank you
St. Paul Family you are awesome!

A Note On behalf of the Elders,
Greg Bickhart & John Beckman

October is the month when we honor and celebrate
our Pastor for his role as our shepherd. Anytime
during the month of October is an appropriate time
to recognize the work and the office he holds among
us. As elders let us encourage each member and
family to celebrate our pastor.

In the service of Installation we were asked: "Will
you receive this pastor, show him that love, honor
and obedience in the Lord that you owe to the shep-
herd and teacher placed over you by your Lord Jesus
Christ, and will you support him by your gifts and
pray for him always that in his labors he may retain a
cheerful spirit and that his ministry among you may
be abundantly blessed? If so answer: 'We will, with
the help of God.'" (LSB Agenda) We answered Yes
with a loud voice. Now is an opportunity to make
good on this pledge.

There are numerous ways we can each honor Pastor.
Individually you could send him a card or an email
expressing the impact his ministry has had on your
life. Give a small gift or invite him and/or his family
for a meal. What is most important is that you take
the time in some way to let Pastor know that you
love and respect him and appreciate the office he
bears.

Let the celebration begin!

Dear St. Paul Lutheran Church and School Family,
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Prov-
erbs 22:6.
We have an opportunity to fulfill this by utilizing the Georgia Education Expense Tax
Credit. Many students have been truly blessed by your past generosity. These scholar-
ships continue to provide students with an exceptional Christ centered education.
As you may be aware, the tax credit cap was raised to $58 million. Though this was signifi-
cantly increased, the cap for 2014 was reached on January 16
th
!!!! This was shocking to say
the least. Along with the increase in available tax credits another change that caused the
credits to be depleted so rapidly was the fact that taxpayers with pass-through income from
small businesses such as an LLCs, Partnerships, or Sub Chapter S Corporations can do-
nate up to $10,000, or their actual Georgia income tax liability (whichever is less). These
changes had a HUGE IMPACT on last years contributions. You still have the option
of contributing as an individual or married couple filing jointly or separately. Whichever op-
tion/options you qualify for as always you receive a dollar for dollar credit on your state in-
come tax.
Would you prayerfully consider making a contribution of your state income tax dollars for
2014? You may go online to our secure student scholarship organizations website: http://
www.georgiasso.us and pay with credit card or indicate check payment. With your generous
donation we are very prayerful that we will be able to reach our goal of $50,000 for this year.
However, you must take action ASAP to get in the queue before the credit cap is reached.
Dont delay: get in the queue today.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. I am
more than happy to assist you. Thank you in advance for your contribution. It is appreciated
more than you can imagine.
