Lesson Idea Template
Name: Kala Howard
Grade Level: First Grade
Content Area: Science
Standards Addressed: S1CS6. Students will be familiar with the character of scientific knowledge and how it is
achieved.
Students will recognize that:
1. When a science investigation is done the way it was done before, we expect to get a similar result.
2. Science involves collecting data and testing hypotheses
3. Scientists often repeat experiments multiple times, and subject their ideas to criticism by other scientists who may
disagree with them and do further tests.
4. All different kinds of people can be and are scientists.

Describe how you would Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your classroom: I would
require that my students follow the link to the Journey North website. Once there I would require that my students
follow the link to the Gray Whales page. The students would be required to gather data on the whales, track their
migration, consult a scientist and post their data. I would make this a unit project and have the work divided among
teams of students.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? Computers,
iPads, and the smart board could all be used to implement this activity.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will work in teams to complete their part of the project and present their findings
to the group and post their data online
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or producing
original products as a result of engaging in the project): Students will gather their own data and
choose how to display their information to their peers.
c. Higher-order thinking: They will be required to track the whales migration pattern and predict
where it will go next.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Once the
project is complete students will post their findings to the website database.

What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and Why? Level 6 Refinement
describes this activity. Students will publish their findings and results.
How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your districts Internet Safety and
Student Privacy policies? Prior to beginning the unit the teacher will present a safety and privacy lesson to the class
and ask that each parent signs a consent form, reviewed by administration, before the project begins. By informing
both administrators and parents of the project and its educational value the teacher will be acknowledging the
students safety. The teacher will also monitor the progress of each student to ensure that policies are being followed.
