ENTREPRENEURS
Necessity-Based
For this observation, I chose the siomay seller which located in front of the Masjid Badan Tenaga Nuklir
Bandung. The business owner is the Mr. Wawan from Subang, West Java. He had started the business in
1994 and now he has 6 employees to sell its product. Mr. Wawan starts selling Siomay after he resigned
as construction worker. Cessation as labor as he was encourages him to start a business to fulfill
financial needs of his family and himself. He chose siomay because he thought that siomay is promising
and has good prospect, considering the number of fans of this traditional food.
For me, there is no noticeable difference between Mr. Wawans business (siomay) with other businesses
(siomay) at same class (usaha siomay sekelasnya), middle-low class. Taste is so-so, price same as other
siomay business. Indeed, this business just to fulfill primary needs (kebutuhan pokok). Besides, maybe
the small number or amount of capital become one of many factors that causes slow development of
Mr. Wawans siomay business.
Opportunity-Based
For opportunity-based, I observed Lembaga Bimbingan Belajar Primagama that already has 181
branches in 96 cities in Indonesia. Primagama provides tutoring in some subjects. With the slogan "if not
go to public/ state college, then the money back", this institution demanded by more than one hundred
thousand students. The founder is Prudi E. Purdi.
It all began when Prudi was bored with his studies at UGM and IKIP, and decided to make a business. He
saw a business opportunity. He saw the enthusiasm of high school students who want to enter public
universities that have a name, like UGM. He thought, how if he helped students to solve their problems,
College Entrance Examination. Purdi then got the idea to set up a tutoring, named Primagama. Purdi
start a business since 1982.
Then, he sold his bike for 300 thousand, he founded Bimbel Primagama by renting a small place and
partitioned into two. At first time, he got 2 students only. And it was a neighbor. Two years later,
Primagama began to be known (well-known). And now, Primagama has more than 100.000 students in all
over country. Because of these developments, Primagama confirmed as Largest Indonesian Tutoring by
MURI (Indonesian Record Museum).
I think Purdi is a model entrepreneur streets, plus modal nekad. He left college in four faculties at UGM
Yogyakarta and IKIP. Then with Rp 300 thousand he founded Primagama March 10, 1982 in Yogyakarta.
Potential business opportunity which lied and people dont realize it. He successfully made Primagama
become huge business which has income almost 70 billion per year, with 200 outlets in more than 106
cities.
