number of spots on a carpet decreased after
treatment of certain brands of carpet cleaning
products were applied.
What is the Independent Variable? What is the
Dependent Variable?

mass vs. weight and volume.

mass
the measure of how much matter is in an
object.

basic metric unit is kilogram (not gram)

weight
the heaviness of a person or thing.

weight = mass x gravity
volume
the amount of space that a substance
occupies.

basic metric unit is liter (L)

Metric Units
The basic unit of length in the metric system in the meter and is represented by a
lowercase m.
Standard: The distance traveled by light in absolute vacuum in 1299,792,458 of a
second.
Metric Units

Due Monday: Metric Conversion Sheet

Learning Goal: To understand the units in the metric
system and conversion of metric units. To understand
mass vs. weight and volume.

Metric Conversion Handout
Due Monday
Mass vs. Weight
Mass
Mass is the amount of matter
(stuff) in an object.

MASS IS ALWAYS CONSTANT.

The basic unit of measurement
is a kilogram (kg).

Weight
Weight is the measure of the
gravitational force between
two objects (how much gravity
pulls on that object).
WEIGHT VARIES BY LOCATION.
The basic unit of weight is in
pounds or Newtons (N)

Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to the
volume of the substance.
Abbreviation - D
D= mass (g)/volume (cm
3
)

The density of a material is the same no matter
how much is present.
Volume
Volume is the amount of space an object takes
up. Abbreviation - V.
2 ways to measure volume.
a) v= l (cm) x w (cm) x h (cm)
b) displacement. 1 mL=1cm

Graduated Cylinder and Mensicus
Measure liquid in a
graduated cylinder at
the liquids lowest
point (adhesion causes
water to cling to the
sides of the glass)
