Dear Parent or Guardian:

Your child is currently learning to identify words that have the
correct spelling with suffixes. Here is your chance to help your
child practice this important skill.

In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.

Remember, parents are a childs first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.

Sincerely,

SPELLING WORDS WITH SUFFIXES

Parent Pointer
Endings for words, such as -ed, -er, -ful, -ing, -ly, -ness, -s, and others,
are called suffixes. It is important for your child to recognize how
words with suffixes are spelled. This skill helps your child know how to
correctly spell such words as he or she figures out unknown words in
reading. It also helps your child in his or her writing.

Reading In the Home, On the Go, and For the Fun of It
DIRECTIONS: Suffixes come at the end of a word. Common suffixes
are -ed, -er, -ful, -ing, -ly, -ness, and -s. It is important for you to
spell words correctly using suffixes. This will help you figure out
words that are unfamiliar to you in your reading and help you use these
words correctly in your writing.

Read the What about Suffixes? page with your parent or guardian.
Talk about the different suffixes and special spelling rules when using
suffixes. Read the directions on the Spelling Words Correctly page
and complete it. Discuss your words with your parent or guardian.
Then read the directions on the Using Words with Suffixes page and
complete your sentences. Share your sentences with your parent or
guardian.

What about Suffixes?

Suffixes are word endings. Examples of suffixes are: -ful
as in careful, or -ing as in reading.

If a word ends with silent e, drop the e before adding a
suffix. For example, believe-believing.

Common Suffixes

-ed (past tense) added

-er (one who) teacher

-ful (full of) helpful

-ing (an action) drawing

-ly (in some manner) quickly

-ness (state of) darkness

-s (plural, more than one) books
