1.

Draft a brief statement of purpose: (This is how you will set up the shadowing experience with
the student)

2. Consider safeguards: (Confidentiality, changing the name of the student/teachers, etc.)

3. What do I want to learn and why? (Think about your inquiry question)

4. How will I set up the process? (Strive for a minimum of day)

5. How will I focus my attention? (Think about what you want to observe-Sam Palmer example)

6. How will I take notes or record my observations? (Think about separating fact from inference,
and avoiding the tendency to make judgments. What am I wondering about?)

7. How will I make sense of the experience and transfer it to my own context? (Think about the
implications for your leadership)

8. What else do I want to consider?

Overall, what do my data suggest?

Whats working? Whats not working?

What are the opportunities for improvement?

What are the implications for me as a leader?

Construct a brief write up of your experience. Start with some background to set the context-introduce
us to the student you selected, classes visited, informal interactions, etc. Use your reflection responses
as the body of your write up. Conclude with the implications for your leadership.
