Physical Education Term 3 Learning Story

On Tuesday August 26
th
, Mr John Dorge, a former Australian Olympic basketball player
spoke to the Grade Six year level about his illustrious career in basketball as a player, coach
and mentor. In his talk, Mr Dorge touched on the three key themes of grasping
opportunities, setting effective goals and working as a part of a team.

Below are a series of reflective questions.

1. MAKING THE MOST OF AN OPPORTUNITY:

a) Reflect on a time, moment or event in which you took a risk and grabbed an
opportunity.
When I was asked to compete in hurdles at athletics, I felt that I wasnt going to
do well, but I went out there and gave it a try. I ended up coming first!

b) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education,
is there something / an opportunity you are looking forward to trying?
I would like to be part of the athletics team, and I would want to try out different
subjects that I have never attempted to do.

2. SETTING EFFECTIVE GOALS:

c) Have you ever taken the time to set yourself a goal or a series of goals? If so, did
you achieve it / them?
I have had a variety of different goals. Here is one that I had about cross country
this year. In grade 4 we ran 2k and I came 22
nd
, last year we ran 3k and I came
13
th
and this year I wanted to beat what I came last year and I did I came 12
th
. (It
was 3k as well)

In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education,
is there a goal or a series of goals you wish to set yourself. If so, what measures
will you take to achieve it / them?
I would like to set myself goals about my academic future (and sport). Like what I
am going to be in the future, and improve on all the subjects that I love.

2. WORKING AS PART OF A TEAM:

d) Reflect on a time, where you worked as a part of a team. Was the team
successful, and if so, how did you positively contribute to the achieved success?
This year at athletics I was in the girls relay team with Alexia, Olivia. B and
Gemma. We came 3
rd
and we were all very proud of the position that we came.

e) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education,
is there an opportunity you are looking forward to trying in which you will have
to work effectively as a part of a team?
If I join any team clubs, for example: Debating, Athletics and much more, it will
be extremely important to corporate as a team.
