Lesson Plan

Year Level: 1
Date/Time: 21.08.14
Learning Area/ACARA focus: Numeracy
Lesson Focus: Chance
Class Size: 6
Duration of Lesson: 20 minutes

Background information:
- Students would have already covered chance in previous terms.
- They might have come across chance in their everyday lives.
- I assumed that the students have heard words such as; will, wont and might.

Teaching/Learning Purpose(s) (Written in terms of outcomes):
Curriculum: Chance
- Identify outcomes of familiar events involving chance and describe them using
everyday language such as will happen, wont happen or might happen.
(ACMSP024)
- Helps to form the start of their thinking.
- They are able to be clear about the situation being considered.
- Be familiar with events that involve chance.
- Be able to relate it to everyday language.

Preparation:
- Have a list of questions that have an outcome of will, wont or might happen.
- Flash cards for the kids to hold up when picking the answer.
- Create a marking rubrics that suits the topic of chance and assesses the kids
on how they understand will, wont or might happen.
Learning Experiences:
1. How will I engage the learners?
- Ask them to come up with their own questions.
- Relate the questions to their everyday lives.
- Include silly/funny (wont happen) sentences to make it fun.
- Get them to use the space of the room to determine whether the answer is
will happen, wont happen or might happen.
2. Student tasks and activities (What will the students do to achieve the lesson
purpose(s)?
- Ask the students a few questions of chance e.g. will the cow jump over the
moon? or will you have to wear your hat outside to play? (5 minutes)
- Use the left side of the room as will
Use the right side of the room as wont
Use the middle of the room as might

Ask them a question and tell them to stand up and walk to left, right or middle
depending on their answer. (10 minutes)
- Ask them to come up with their own questions. (5 minutes)

3. Conclusion (How do you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
purpose(s)?
- Ask students to come up with their own questions and mark them accordingly
on a rubrics that demonstrates whether they do, dont or somewhat
understand the concepts of chance.
- Keep the questions based on everyday events, as they may come across
those questions again.

Assessment and evaluation: (How do you know when the students have achieved
the learning purpose(s). Evaluate your own performance)
- I will know when the students are able to make the right decision on whether it
will, wont or might happen.
- Students are able to come up with their own questions involving everyday
situations.
- Mark on the rubrics whether they do, dont or somewhat understand.
