TO UPHOLD BAHASA MALAYSIA &

TO STRENGTHEN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

(MBMMBI)

OBJECTIVE
This presentation is aimed at explaining the governments decision in approving the
Ministry of Education strategic proposal to uphold Bahasa Malaysia(BM) and to
strengthen the teaching and learning of the English Language

INTRODUCTION
To strengthen the command of English, the ministry will improve on the existing
curriculum and provide sufficient and quality teachers and teaching materials

THE DEFINITION OF MBMMBI

To strengthen the English language means to enhance the command of the language
as a compulsory language to be learned, the language of communication and of
knowledge at the national and interesting levels

THE OBJECTIVES OF MBMMBI

Proficiency in the English language is important because English is the international
language of communication. Mastering the language enables the exploration of
knowledge which is vital for one to nationally and globally

THE STATUS OF PPSMI IMPLEMENTATION

The results of the UPSR, PMR and SPM examinations showed that the achievement
of students in BM was much higher than in English irrespective of whether the
students were in the urban or the rural areas. The results showed that students would
do better if Science and Mathematics were taught in BM

The results of the UPSR examination in Science and Mathematics in National schools
showed a deterioration in the achievement of the ABC grades for the first batch who
went through the full PPSMI in primary schools

The gap in achievement between schools in the urban and rural areas in the Science
and Mathematics subjects had widened during the implementation of PPSMI

Based on these observations, the government is convinced that Science and

Mathematics need to be taught in a language easily understood by students

Produce Malaysians in BM and English in all aspects of communication be in their
daily conversations, when conducting official matters and seeking knowledge or in
their respective careers.
Create a nation of 1Malaysia whose citizens possesses strong personal resilience and
are progressive , dynamic, and competitive at the international level.

CONCLUSION
With this decision, the government is taking a new approach in the teaching of
Science, Mathematics, English and Bahasa Malaysia. The government believes this
can uphold Bahasa Malaysia, strengthen the command of the English language, and

boost students capability in mastering Science and Mathematics which are vital for
the nations future
