Mid-Semester Progress Report for Your Student

March 20, 2013

Dear Ms. Alvarez,

I am writing to update you about your students performance in my
World History II course. Even though he came into the class 3-weeks
late because your family moved from Boston to Providence, he adjusted
well at first.

During the first half of the year he was doing great. He turned in all of
his homework, participated in discussions, and received As on all of my
tests. Then, when March came, Juan was struggling. He went from
perfect attendance to coming to school for a week, then missing the
entire next week.

Because of his low unexcused attendance, Juan is receiving a 0 for class
participation. His homework grade is also very low. I know he could be
a great student, but because of his strange behavior this March, I am
afraid I will have to fail him. Please talk to your son immediately. He
wasnt at school today.

Best,

Ms. Black
Central High School
History Teacher

especially my afterschool internship at Engineering Inc. I try to be nice and smile but Im

Hi son,

I just wanted to check on you. How is Providence? Your mother isnt being too strict is she?
I really wish I had custody, but since I travel so much for my job, the judge thought it was
best that you stayed with her. Im really starting to regret agreeing to this arrangement. Im
calling a lawyer first thing on Monday.

We miss you at Engineering Partners Inc. and the other high school interns say hello. Every
time I come to work I think about you. I hope to see you soon! Really soon.

Oh, and please dont tell your mom about the lawyer thing. I want her to think nothing is
wrong.

Love,
Dad

POLICE REPORT from March 20, 2013

Statement from Ysabel Vasquez, Juans Mother
She called the police at 6:30pm and police interviewed her at her
house on Fricker St.

Ysabel: Juan didnt come home from school on March 20
th
. He
usually walks right home after 2:45 and gets here around 3pm. I
came home from work today at 6pm like I always do. I could tell he
had been here because some of the food was gone from the fridge.
He also took his coat from the closet and 2-days of clothes. He wont
answer his phone. This is not like him at all. He is such a great son.

Detective: Was Juan happy in Providence?

Ysabel: Well, um, he was okay I guess. Getting used to it. He really
liked Boston, but I promised him I was going to enroll him in a
science camp in Pawtucket this summer. That made him happy. I
thought things were getting better. He said he had some friends at
Central.

Detective: Did you know Juan had been skipping school starting
March 1
st
?

Ysabel: I had no idea! He was always home on time and said school
was fine.

POLICE REPORT from March 20
th

Police arrived at Juans fathers house to interview him and he was not
there. They called Juans father who answered his cell phone and
explained he was on a business trip at Engineering Partners Co.
conference. He could not meet the police in Boston because he is the
director of the entire conference of 500 engineers from across the
world.

On the phone, Juans father told police:

Carlos: Juans missing? Im sure hell turn up. It hasnt been that
long has it? Is his mother just worrying too much?

Detective: Do you have any idea where he could be?

Carlos: No, sir. Hes a good kid. He might be at a friends house?
Hell turn up. Please let me know if I can be of help in any way I can.
Im sorry but I have to get back to my conference. The President of
Brazil just arrived and she needs to speak with me. Please call me
with any other information.

Detective: Anything else you want to tell us?

Carlos: Just that Im really busy at this conference. I can accept calls
but I dont have time for any visitors to come here to Washington
D.C. Okay?
