Time is an integral part of our living. Children as young as 4 learn at what
time regular activities occur. The time terms used are at first descriptive or
part of a described sequence of activities. A 6 years old child is able to tell
the time by the clock, at first only the o'clock times, later the half-hours
and then quarter-hours.

In the past children learned to judge time intervals by using the analogue
clock. By observing the movements and position of the hands on the
clock, they developed the sense of time and the feeling of passing time.

A child has to develop an understanding of the passage of time, its
measurement and representation. A child has to learn to sequence,
compare, order and measure the duration of events.

It is difficult to learn, feel and experience duration from reading and
observing a digital clock. To understand the digital system the child has to
master the concept of tens and ones. There is nothing to focus on,
nothing to follow and observe.

The analogue clock with its two hands is a very logical mathematical
measuring device. By watching the hands moving around the clock, it is
possible to judge, count or estimate the time gone and the time to go. it is
fairly easy to plan the length of an activity, the time needed to get to a
bus, to play, to leave to be at home on time using the analogue clock.

In this day and age it is important to learn to understand both systems,
the analogue and the digital!

"WHAT TIME IS IT?" is a set of reproducible worksheets interpreting and
consolidating time concepts and time measurement through realistic
problem solving activities.

Organised progressive tasks that are presented in a step to step
sequence of difficulty lead students to master the basic concepts and
skills of telling time using digital and/or analogue clocks.

As digital clocks are being very popular with the young generation,
analogue clocks are being neglected. "WHAT TIME IS IT?" provides
balanced material to master both systems confidently.
