Policies and Procedures for our Learning Environment

Philosophy
I believe that creating conditions for learning starts with establishing an orderly,
predictable, consistent and caring environment from the first day of school. In effective
classrooms, management and good academic instruction go together. I believe that all
students can make responsible choices. Through the Tega Cay Elementary School
discipline plan, my classroom discipline plan, and parent involvement, students will be
empowered with the knowledge to develop good citizenship skills and to make positive
life choices for the twenty-first century. This philosophy will be achieved through the
unity, consistency, and commitment of all stake holders. To protect the learning
environment, I have developed the following management plan.

Policies and Procedures

Entering the classroom
1. Students will report directly to the appropriate location in the hall (outside our
classroom door) when they arrive to school each morning unless otherwise
given permission by the teacher or school staff member.
2. Students will enter the classroom in an orderly and quiet fashion. Those who
enter in any other manner will be asked to exit the room and to reenter in the
appropriate way.
3. Students may speak to their classmates quietly as they unpack their bags (few
minutes).
4. The students will go to their desks, unpack, and then place their book bags,
lunch boxes, coats, notes for teachers, lunch money, etc. in the designated
location for each. For safety reasons, book bags will not be allowed to be kept
at desks.
5. Students will also use this time to sign in, make their lunch choice, drop off their
homework, gather necessary materials, and visit the restroom.
6. Students will promptly begin on their morning work (ie., ELA 4 Today, cursive
handwriting, etc.)

Morning Announcements and Pledge of Allegiance
1. Students should minimize talking or moving around the room during the
morning announcements. Teacher will follow preventive techniques to
reinforce behaviors. Students should participate in the morning pledge of
allegiance to the American Flag unless directed otherwise by religious
affiliations. A moment of silence will also be observed in the classroom for all
students to reflect and get ready to begin the day.

Hallway
1. Students will line up quickly and quietly in the classroom by varying techniques.
All students must move out with the class and students will not be permitted to
stay in the classroom while the rest of the class moves on.
2. Talking will not be permitted in the hallway to prevent interrupting other classes
that may still be working.
3. Hallway passes to visit the restroom, nurse, etc. will be issued on individual
basis.

During Instruction
1. Students should remain seated at all times during a lesson unless prompted to
move by the teacher and/or instructor. Students will not use this time to
sharpen pencils, talk, work on other assignments, or move around the room
unless prompted by the teacher.
2. Students who talk while the teacher is talking will be corrected using the
discipline policy in place.
3. Students must use their manners while working in cooperative groups and must
not talk while another person is talking in their group.
4. Students will keep a book at their desk at all times in case they complete an
assignment early. Students must read when they finish an assignment early.

Homework
1. Homework will be assigned Monday Thursday as reinforcement to concepts
covered in the classroom. With the exception of projects and reading,
homework should not take more than 30 minutes.
2. Each student is responsible for writing down their homework assignments daily
in their agenda during the time set aside to copy their homework down.
Parents should initial the agenda each night to verify that the student has
completed his/her homework.

Agendas
1. Each student will be given an agenda by Tega Cay Elementary.
2. Students who misplace their agenda should be prepared to pay the office to be
issued a new agenda.
3. Students are responsible for copying down the homework and special notes for
each night.
4. Parents will need to initial the bottom of the agenda each night to verify that
homework has been completed and any special notes from Mr. Beasley have
been read.

Reading Log/Journals
1. As a part of homework, students should read each night for at least 15 minutes.
2. While weekend reading is recommended, only Monday Thursday
documentation of reading is required.
3. Students who have all reading journal entries completed for the month will
receive a free pizza certificate through Pizza Huts Book-It program (As long as
the program is offered).

Tests
1. All subjects will be tested at the end of each instructional unit. Students will be
given at least 3-4 days notice of an upcoming test.

2. There is no room for cheating in the classroom. Students caught cheating will
receive a zero and parents/guardians will be notified by phone.

Materials/Supplies
1. All students must be prepared for class each time the come to school. The
students binder must stay organized and be taken to and from school everyday.

Bathroom
1. Students may use the restroom before the tardy bell in the morning and during
designated break times during the school day.
2. For emergencies, students should ask the teacher to be dismissed from the
classroom but should refrain from disturbing instruction.
3. All students are to wash their hands when finished in the restroom.

Classroom Library
1. Students will be allowed to borrow books from our school, classroom, and grade
level library. Students should take care of these books as if they are their own.
2. Students should keep a zip-lock bag to help protect the books from becoming
damaged while traveling from school to home and back.
3. Students are asked to help maintain the classroom library by returning books to
the correct shelves and bins.
4. Students are expected to replace a book if it should be misplaced or damaged
while in their possession.

Cafeteria
1. While in the cafeteria, students should conduct themselves in a manner that is
appropriate for a table where others are eating (refraining from loud
conversations, inappropriate language/discussions, touching other people or
their food).
2. Students will have enough time to consume their entire lunch.

Recess
1. Please be aware of our scheduled recess time and weather forecast conditions
for this time of day when preparing your child for school each day. Students
should be dressed appropriately.
2. We will have indoor recess if rainy weather conditions or wet field conditions
exist or if temperatures are extreme.
3. Students who fail to complete homework, morning work, or were disruptive in
class may lose partial or complete recess.

Absent Students
1. Please try to plan any vacations or getaways when students are out of school.
2. If a student must be absent and you know about it in advance, please notify me
as soon as possible.
3. If a student is sick or absent, please send in an excuse for attendance office.
Any work that is missed should be made up within 2-3 days of absence.
4. If a student is absent on a test day, the student will take the test on the day of
their return, unless agreed upon by the teacher for another day.

Communication
1. The teacher will contact the parents as often as needed via phone, letter, or
email.

2. Classroom newsletters and graded student work will be sent home at least
every other week to help parents stay informed of classroom happenings.

Birthdays
1. Birthdays are a special occasion for everyone! If you are planning to bring in a
treat for the class to help celebrate your childs birthday, please bring it during
our lunch time. Please be aware of any classroom allergies when bringing
treats for the class! Consider bringing is a healthy treat to share.
2. We will celebrate summer birthdays on the students half birthday and weekend
birthdays on the Friday before.
3. Consider donating a book to the class on your childs birthday. Please help
your child wrap it, and he or she will be able to choose a friend to open it and
present it to the class. You can even paste a picture of your child or your
family in the front cover to let everyone know that it was a donation from
you. They are a gift that our whole class can enjoy again and again.

Extracurricular Activities.
1. Social interactions are crucial to development of third graders. Therefore, some
parents allow their children to participate in a variety of activities after school.
Please remember that education is a very important part of their development
and should be a top priority.
2. Please send any team, recital, etc. schedules to me so that I can plan to attend
some events in the evenings or on weekends! I love watching students excel
in education and in other activities of interest to them.
