TOEFL

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) measures the level of English language proficiency of non-
native speakers of English. The test has four sections - Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written
Expression, Reading Comprehension and Test of Written English.

TOEFL is prepared by Educational Testing Service (ETS) from Princeton, New Jersey, USA. It is an admission
requirement at colleges and universities in the United States and other parts of the world. In addition many
scholarship and professional certification programs now require their applicants to take the TOEFL.

HOW TO DO THE TESTS

Each TOEFL test consists of 4 sections (Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, Reading
Comprehension a Test of Written English), the first three of these are evaluated automatically by the computer. The
time reserved for each section is limited, therefore read carefully how to proceed in the tests before you start work.
You are not allowed to return to the previous sections. After exceeding the time limit you will automatically continue
with the next section.

The fourth section is not included in the tests. Some advice and recommendations relating to this section can be
found in Test of Written English of The Heinemann TOEFL Preparation Course.

Procedure:
1. When doing a test for the first time, read carefully the introductory information and directions to the individual
sections. The introductions in the test are not modified, they correspond to the classic paper tests.
2. To answer the questions is very simple. Just click on one of the choices. The selected choice will be
highlighted.
3. In Listening section you have 12 seconds to answer each question. After this time limit elapses you will
automatically continue with the next question. In other sections of the test you will click on one of the
possibilities and confirm your choice clicking DONE button. Doing so you will activate the next question. It is not
necessary to use DONE button, you can just answer the question and then click the following question.
4. You can also select the question by clicking the question number above the panel with the questions or using
the scroll bar on the right side of question panel and then clicking directly the chosen question. NOTICE! It is
necessary to select question first (it must have white background) only then can you choose one of the possible

answers.
5. In each section of the test you can watch your time limit and the number of already completed questions on the
right panel.
6. To switch to the next part of the test use GO ON button (in the bottom right corner).

Note:
All the tests are time limited. The Listening section is time controlled (you have 12 seconds for your answer) so you
will probably have no time for additional corrections.

For easier orientation, the questions are marked with following colours:

white current question
light blue unanswered question
dark blue completed question

If you finish the test or if the time limit exceeds, you can have the test evaluated. Then you can check you score and
review the answers.

Short checkpoint tests and longer section tests can be done in the same way as complete TOEFL practice tests.

HOW TO USE THIS COURSE

1. Start with the diagnostic test. On the basis of the results of the test the Personal Planner will recommend a
structure of checkpoints for you to follow to eliminate your weaknesses in English.

2. At the beginning of each TOEFL section you will be acquainted with recommended strategies, which will help
you to succeed in the TOEFL exam.

3. Each checkpoint contains both theory (grammar explanations, useful recommendations) and practice
(exercises - often with the time limit). Your task is to study these recommended checkpoints.

4. Following study of several checkpoints there will always be a short checkpoint test aimed at assessing your
competence in their usage. Based upon your results of these tests your personal plan may be modified

5. After working through all of the checkpoints relating to one section of the TOEFL test you should complete a
section test. The result of this may once again influence your further learning plan.

6. Naturally at any time during your work you may go through the checkpoints which do not figure in your personal
plan. In the case that you are limited by time for study the simplest and most effective course of action is to
concentrate first on those areas highlighted by the Intelligent Personal Planner as your weaknesses.

7. You can also work through the tests from The Heinemann TOEFL Practice Tests title throughout the course
of your study.

8. To improve your listening comprehension, the accompanying texts to all the recorded parts are available.

9. Further useful recommendations can be found in chapters: Notes for the Teacher and Notes for the Self-
Study Student in the introduction to The Heinemann TOEFL Preparation Course.

ASSISTANT

Throughout the course of your work you are guided by an Assistant (the little figure in the upper right corner). It
watches you constantly, tells you what to do (what is your task) in tests and exercises, evaluates your answers,
helps you to work with your Preparation Plan for TOEFL and always offers you the steps available in a current
situation.

If you need some advice, click the Assistant.

A Personal Planner is a unique facility, which will reveal the weaknesses in your knowledge of English and thus
enable you to concentrate preferentially on them.

Notebook is another original helper, which will faciliate writing and sorting your own notes to this course as well as
to other titles of Electronic Publishing Association (EPA). Further facilities you can make use of are information
about Progress and overall Statistics.

Several users can work with the application on one computer, each of them having his own personal plan of
preparation for TOEFL exam. The multiuser version can be selected in Notebook on the "Other possibilities" card.

In the course you will encounter summaries (grammar, vocabulary, strategies), checkpoints, which comprise the
textual part with theory explanation, and several exercises for practice, and of course a number of practice tests -
short checkpoint tests, longer section tests and the complete TOEFL practice tests. Before you start work with the
course, read How to use this course.

TOEFL Preparation Course.

PERSONAL PLANNER

A unique facility, a Personal Planner, is a part of The Heinemann TOEFL application. On the basis of performed
tests it makes up the student's personal plan of improvement, suggesting checkpoints to study to eliminate
weaknesses in those parts of English which would otherwise have hindered successful completion of the TOEFL
exam. The Personal Plan is divided into the same sections as real TOEFL test (Listening Comprehension, Structure
and Written Expression and Reading Comprehension) arranged according to priorities (the section that you are
weakest in, will be first on the list). Checkpoints, that are of key importance for you, are marked red.

Your Personal Plan can be accessed either from the main screen of The Heinemann TOEFL Preparation Course
or from the menu that will appear on the screen after right mouse click. Work with the plan is very simple. Start with
a diagnostic test from The Heinemann TOEFL Preparation Course. Then you will be guided by the Assistant.
When choosing a checkpoint from your plan, study the theory first then do all the exercises. The simpliest way of
going through the plan is to press GO ON button and follow the instructions of the Assistant.

The Personal Planner cooperates with The Heinemann TOEFL Practice Tests. All the tests from this title will
modify your Personal Plan.
