Pupils will develop an understanding of the
environment and animals through discussions,
presentations and starter activities that develop
pupils thinking skills.
Pupils will explore and investigate a broad range
of artists such as Ruth Harris, Andy Goldsworthy
and Susan Taylor.
Pupils will investigate the importance of making
visuals such as posters, recycled textile nests and
final outcomes with opportunities to experiment
with different techniques and mediums.
Pupils will develop and refine their understanding
and investigation of issues surrounding
deforestation and the effect on animal habitats
through making a textile nest considering pattern
and repetition.

Pupils will work towards creating
their own textile nest using paper
plates and fabric thread.

create nests?

Artist Susan Taylor Glasgow creates a 10 foot birds nest out of glass-blown twigs as well as
real twigs. They are interwoven and weigh more than 3,000 pounds. The installation
changes and grows as it moves from location to location. Twigs are added from each
community where the exhibition is hosted. The artwork is called The community Nest. The
artist explores ideas of family, home, nesting and travel through building a nest with a life-
size chair in the centre.

Pupils compare the two
artists in an x factor
style literacy lesson.
Pupils are challenged to
question the artists
intentions and form
their own ideas to
inspire their textile
nests.

In groups you will discuss:

What materials the artist has used.
Natural materials? Recycled materials? Paint?
Wood? Objects?

The style of the artwork.
Is it a sculpture? Installation? Painting?

The size of the artwork?
Is it large? Small? Life-size? Realistic? Gigantic?

Where the artwork is?
Is it displayed in a gallery? In a museum?
Outdoors? In nature?

Your opinion. Which do you prefer and
why? What do you think the artist is
trying to show?

Pupils learn
about different
artists and ways
to manipulate
materials to
create their own
forest inspired
nests.
Pupils learn
about
sustainability and
ways to be more
environmentally
friendly.
In your sketchbooks you will write:
- A sentence on what materials you have used.
- A sentence on what materials you could also add into
your weaves.
- How you could develop the pattern through
changing texture, colour and size of material.
Starting a new paragraph
you will write:
- A sentence on what
you like about your
weave.
- A sentence on how
you could develop
your weave.
- A sentence on how you
have been sustainable.
