Literacy Development Strategy

1.) Writing
5.B write using newly acquired basic vocabulary and content-based grade-level
vocabulary
Materials: story element graphic organizer worksheet, pencil
http://youtu.be/vOhW6oDbguk
The 2
nd
grade bilingual class has been studying about Americas and Texas patriotic
symbols. The class will listen to the YouTube read aloud of The Legend of the
Bluebonnet. The students will have a story element graphic organizer worksheet to fill
out as they listen to the story. They will also have 5 comprehension questions to answer
about the story. After they have finished listening to the read aloud, they may
collaborate with their reading buddy on the story element graphic organizer. They will
turn that in, and then answer the 5 comprehension questions independently and turn
that in.
Rationale: This activity will help ELLs who struggle with conventional sentence structure
and word order. It will also help the ELL improve their spelling, but may still have
frequent errors and invented spelling. It will also provide support to the ELL who is able
to select strong word choices and usage.
2.) Writing
5.C spell familiar English words with increasing accuracy, and employ English spelling
patterns and rules with increasing accuracy as more English is acquired.
Materials: notebook paper, pencil
The 3
rd
grade bilingual class has been learning to write numbers in word form. The
students will copy a list of 15 numbers (179, 534, 7,823, etc.) from the promethean board
onto their notebook paper. The students will then write the word form for each number
next to it or on the next line. The students need to write the word form of the number
accurately. The students can use their list of numbers and its written word to refer to.
Rationale: ELLs who produce very little writing will benefit from this activity. This activity
will help with improvement in spelling. They may still have frequent errors and invented
spelling. For advanced ELLs, this activity will support their writing that is like that of a
native speaker
3.) Writing
5.D edit writing for standard grammar and usage, including subject-verb agreement,
pronoun agreement, and appropriate verb tenses commensurate with grade-level
expectations as more English is acquired
Materials: interactive writing notebook, pencil
The 3
rd
grade ESL students have been given 5 sentences on the promethean board to
copy in their interactive writing notebook. Each sentence has 2 errors that need to be
corrected. The errors may include subject-verb agreement, punctuation, verb tense,
and pronoun agreement. After the students have completed the assignment in their
interactive notebook, students are called upon to show the corrections they made to
the sentences on the promethean board. The students can check their work in their
notebook.
Rationale: This activity will benefit ELLs who have frequent errors in grammar,
vocabulary, and usage, some of which may not be common to native English
beginning writers. This activity will support the ELLs who have general knowledge of
simple sentence types and capitalization/punctuation conventions. It will also support
students whose grammar and spelling resembles that of a native speaker of the same
age.

Oral Language Strategies
1.) Listening
2.F listen to and derive meaning from a variety of media such as audio tape, video,
DVD, and CD ROM to build and reinforce concept and language attainment
Materials: die, base ten block manipulatives, dry eraser marker & sock, laminated place
value chart
http://youtu.be/5W47G-h7myY
The 1st grade bilingual class is learning about place value. The students will listen to Mr.
R.s Place Value Math Song: Ones, Tens, Hundreds. The students are working in pairs to
help each other understand the concept of place value. The students will take turns
rolling the die, writing their number on the place value chart, read their number to each
other and explain what number is represented in each place value.
Rationale: ELLs in the silent period will benefit from this activity. This activity helps the
students focus on listening comprehension. The ELLs will expand their receptive
vocabulary with this activity and increase their language comprehension.
2.) Speaking
3.E share information in cooperative learning interactions
Materials: Science textbook, laptops, large manila paper, pencils, map pencils, markers
The 5th grade ESL class has been studying about ecosystems. The students are in
cooperative learning groups of 4. Each group has a different ecosystem to research
and each student is researching a different part of their ecosystem. The students will
take turns sharing the information they have learned from their research with the
members of their group. Then cooperatively they will illustrate and label their ecosystem
on the large manila paper.
Rationale: ELLs in the pre-production stage will be to show their L2 comprehension
without having to produce L2 language. ELLs will develop higher levels of language use
in science because the students are more able to produce the academic language
necessary participating in this activity. This supports the advanced ELLs in their speaking
and comprehension levels that are nearly comparable to native speakers
3.) Listening
2.F listen to and derive meaning from a variety of media such as audio tape, video,
DVD, and CD ROM to build and reinforce concept and language attainment
2.I demonstrate listening comprehension of increasingly complex spoken English by
following directions, retelling or summarizing spoken messages, responding to questions
and requests, collaborating with peers, and taking notes commensurate with content
and grade-level needs.

The 2
nd
grade ESL class has been studying about Americas and Texas patriotic
symbols. The class will listen to the YouTube read aloud of The Legend of the
Bluebonnet. Afterwards the students will discuss the story with their classmates in their
group. Then Table 1 will retell the beginning of the story, Table 2 will retell the middle of
the story, Table 3 will retell the end of the story, and Table 4 will summarize the story.
Rationale: This activity helps the students focus on listening comprehension. The students
will collaborate in a small group to complete a specific task such as retelling and
summarizing.
