1. Lester, Julius, and Tom Feelings. To Be a Slave ; Thirtieth Anniversary Edition.

NY: Dial,
1998. Print.
The main point of this book is that it talks about different African Americans experiences during
the time of slavery. It shows us the feelings of people during oppression.
I feel like this is a useful source because it shows us the early years of African Americans and the
struggles that they have been through that lead up to the Black Liberation. I dont think that this
source is biased because it is peoples true emotions. This source is reliable because it is poetry of
African Americans and that is a main part of my assignment.
This source was helpful to be because it shows me an alternative side to what African Americans
dealt with as slaves and it relates to how they were treated during the late 19
th
century. It talks
about the issues with slavery such as the resistance to slavery as well as when people would
auction off black for work which shows us the early stages of racism against the African
Americans throughout this country.

2. Trodd, Zoe. "Chapter 10: Civil Rights and Black Liberation." American Protest Literature.
Cambridge, MA: Belknap of Harvard UP, 2006. N. pag. Print.
The main arguments of these texts are to talk about Black Liberation and Civil Rights. Some of
the texts offer experience through an African Americans eyes, and others talk about civil rights
and what people should have (as rights).
This is a very useful source because it is one of the main textbooks for this class. We were
supposed to choose a chapter in the book so it is a reliable source. It relates to my other sources
because it talks about civil rights and black liberation.
This source has helped me shape my assignment because it is the main topic on which my
assignment is about. There is a lot of textual support within this chapter to help me with my Final
Project. Within the chapter are different famous political figures that have speeches and stories
about what they what to change within their communities.

3. McWhorter, Diane, and Fred Shuttlesworth. A Dream of Freedom: The Civil Right Movement
from 1954 to 1968. New York: Scholastic, 2004. Print.

The main point of this article is that it is a book about the Civil Rights Movement. The book is
about the people involved in the movements as well as other African Americans who were in the
pursuit of social and political equity.

This is a useful source because it is a straight on book about the section that my project is on. It
has experiences of different people as well as some useful information. This is a book that is
basically a timeline and shows me all of the important events that occurred during the civil rights
movement.

This source was very helpful to me. It helps shape my argument because it has the positive and
negative outcomes that came from the civil rights movement. There are many famous people in
here, which I can use as resources for my essay. There are also examples of different historical
protests, rallies, and other important factors that led up to the change of segregation.

4. Bolden, Tonya. Tell All the Children Our Story: Memories and Mementos of Being Young and
Black in America. New York: Abrams, 2001. Print.

The main point of this book is to show us the lives of young African Americans that lived in the
United States. It begins with children from Jamestown all the way up to the fight for civil rights.
It shows the struggles of being African American and a child.

I believe this is a useful source because it shows us the struggles of the young children and their
experience through the oppression Blacks faced. There are memoirs and diary entries that show
us their experiences.

This source was helpful to me because I learned about the struggles of being a young African
American in the United States. It helps my argument with the struggle during the Civil Rights
Movement because it shows us the life of others through their personal writings. It has helped
change my view on the topic by reading real evidence and not just a research paper.

5. Hughes, Langston. The Dream Keeper: And Other Poems. New York: Knopf, 1959. Print.

The main point to this book is that it mainly talks about the African American culture. There are
political undertones within his poems. This book also has poems that describe the struggles that
the African Americans faced and their life through racism. Even though the poems are relatively
short, there is a deep meaning behind each one.

This is a useful source for my project because it is written by one of the famous poets from the
black liberation in the U.S. These poems describe different experiences of people from a little
Beggar Boy to a Mexican Market Woman. There are different perspectives of peoples lives
from the civil rights time period throughout the poems.

This was a helpful source for me because I got to read poems from a man who lived during the
time of the oppression during the civil rights movement. I got to look into his personal thoughts
and memories. Some of his poems in this book are useful for my project because it talks about the
problems with racism and the struggles for African Americans.

This source was found on the Internet. The main point for this resource is that it is a
documentary about the historical struggles that people had faced during the times of the
civil rights movement. This documentary talks about how poetry affected the movement
and brought the message for freedom.

This is a useful source for me because this is from the PBS website. PBS is a useful and
reliable source for my project because this is a place that discusses various educational
programs. They are a reliable source for finding out information about the civil rights
movement. It will help me understand more about how poetry is used within protests.

This was a helpful source because it has a lot of information about the civil rights. PBS is a
reliable source because they are up to date and discuss the main and important parts of the
civil rights movement. They talk about how poetry has impacted the civil rights movement
and how it has helped advance the message for the justice of African Americans and their

7. Maya Angelou Poems." Thousands of Poems, Poets, & Poetry Resources. N.p., n.d. Web. 22
July 2014.

This source was also found on the Internet. The reason I chose this as one of my sources is
because it is a collection of Maya Angelous poems. Maya Angelou is an American poet who was
an important poet and figure in the Civil Rights Movement. She Is an inspiration and her poems
are a reflection of her life and struggles. Some of her poems describe the hostile environment she
was living in. Other poems of her connect with her African past.

This is a useful source for me because Maya Angelou was a famous poet during the times of
oppression for blacks as well as the African American Civil Rights Movement. She has written
poems, which express her feelings during the rough times of racism as well as how the way of
living was.

This was a helpful source for me because I was required to get some inspiration from poetry and
Maya Angelou was a famous poet during the Black liberation. Many of her poems are famous
and she has been nominated for various awards for her poems. She is an inspiration for the rise of
acknowledging justice within her community.

8. Phillis Wheatley Poems." Thousands of Poems, Poets, & Poetry Resources. N.p., n.d. Web.
22 July 2014.

For my last source I has used the same website to research my last poet during the Civil Rights
Movement. This source is about Phillis Wheatley. Phillis Wheatley was a famous poet. In fact,
she was the first African American female writer to be published in the U.S. She was famous for
her poems and literature. George Washington called her a great poetical Genius.

This is a reliable source because it has information about the poet, her accomplishments, as well
as her collection of poems. There are examples of the early times of slavery, which are the root
sources of the beginning of the civil rights movement and the fight for change within the black
communities.

This is a helpful source because I am researching about the first female writer to be published in
the U.S. She is a famous writer during the early times of slavery in our country. She proved that
African Americans are capable of writing poetry, according to the white people. Her poetry was
impactful to the movement of abolishing slavery and showed how it felt to be depicted in a
negative way due to racism.
