In March 1927, theAmerican Standards Association authorized the organization of a

Sectional Committee on Standardization of Dimensions and Material of Wrought Steel and
Wrought Iron Pipe and Tubing for the purpose of unifying the standards of these commodities
in force in this country. The American Society for Testing and Materials and The American
Society of Mechanical Engineers were designated as sponsors, and the first meeting of the
Sectional Committee washeld in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, onMay 18, 1928.
The dimensions of commercialpipe in generaluse in theUnited States at thetime
conformed rather generallytothoserecommended
by the ASME Committee onStandard
PipeandPipe Threads published in 1886 (ASME Transactions, Vol.VIII,p. 29). On these
standards an enormous industryhas beenbuiltandthe
satisfactory useof thisproduct
provesthe soundness ofthe original designand specification.
Increasingly severe service demands at thetimeofthe
Committees organization had
beenmetby using the nearest available pipe or tubing for heavier sections such as casing,
mechanicaltubing, etc., with resultinguneconomicalmultiplicity ofwallthicknesses.
Subsequently, the Committee, withthecooperation
of the industry, made a survey of
existing practice as the logical starting point for the development of an American Standard.
Fromthis survey, a table was designed to provide a selectionofwall thicknesses ofpipe
to cover the power piping requirements of industry where strength to resist internal pressure
governsselection andwas later expandedtoincludepipe
diameters and thicknesses used
in other industries.
The original intent of the Committee was to establish a system of Schedule Numbers
forpipesize/wallthicknesscombinationswhichwouldhaveanapproximatelyuniform
loo0 timesthe
P/S expression contained in themodifiedBarlow
relationship equalto
formula for pipewallthickness as defined in theAppendixtothis
standard. The resulting
Numbersdeparted so far from existing wall thicknesses in commonusethattheoriginal
intent could not beaccomplished. The Schedule Numberswerethen adopted strictly as a
convenient designationsystemfor use in ordering.
Inall cases, the designer mustbasehisselection
on the rules and allowable stresses set
by the code which governs his particular construction. The table is dimensionally complete
for all sizes andwallthicknesseswithinits
scope, but some ofthe larger, heavier wall
sections arebeyond the capability of seamlessmillproductionandmustbeobtainedfrom
or othersources.

The

the Foreword, the Schedule Numbers were subsequently
added as a convenient designation for useinordering

9 WALLTHICKNESSSELECTION

When the selection of wall thickness depends primarily upon capacity to resist internal pressure under given

conditions, thedesignershallcomputethe
exact value
ofwall thickness suitable for conditions for which the
pipeis required, asprescribed in detail in the ASME
BoilerandPressureVesselCode,
ASME B31 Code
for Pressure Piping, or other similar codes, whichever
governs the construction. A thickness shallbe selected
fromTable 1 to suit the valuecomputed to fulfill the
conditions for which the pipe is desired.
