Introduction
DHUFT provide a core Podiatry Service weekly to the rough sleepers and vulnerably
housed individuals in Dorset. The Podiatry Team has established links with the outreach
team in street services. They accompany street services directly engaging with rough
sleepers to raise awareness of the service and more importantly how to access the service.
The Team
The Podiatry Service runs as
part of a specialist multi-
disciplinary team, including
specialist GP's, specialist
nurses, mental health team,
dentistry, counsellors, social
services, needle exchange
service and substance abuse
workers.
Aims
The clinic, based at St
Pauls in Bournemouth, is
run on a self-referral, drop
in basis. This arrangement
is an essential criterion, as
service users lead chaotic
lives - to plan a visit for
many would simply be
unachievable.
Pathologies
Some of the most commonly
encountered foot problems
include:
Trench Foot
Ingrowing toenails
Varying neuropathies
Musculoskeletal issues
Various skin pathologies
Conclusions
Collection points are set up
for general public and
mainstream NHS staff to
donate good quality hosiery
and footwear (especially
mens, sizes 9-12) because
clients are particularly at risk
of foot complaints as they
may walk many miles in a
day, often in poor footwear.
Please do contact us if you
have shoes to donate.
