GOALS/OBJECTIVES
Our overarching goal is to support educational institutions by providing individualized
instruction that enhances formal instruction.
Our tangible goals for Reading Corps were:
To provide at least 24 session throughout the year in the Arlington Community
To work with at least 60 children
Achieve an improvement in pre- and post-evaluations in at least 70% of students

PROGRESS
The Reading Corps programs run for a total of three semesters each year: Fall, Spring, and
Summer. The grant we received from Dollar General allowed us to buy supplies for the year,
starting with the Fall 2013 semester. Currently, we have completed the fall semester and are
wrapping up the spring semester within the next couple of weeks. The summer semester will
begin in June.

The number of sites increased over the year, with the two fewer sites in the summer due to the
fact that 2 of the spring sites were at local elementary schools, which will not be open during
the summer months.

FREQUENCY OF ACTIVITIES
Each site meets twice a week for the duration of the semester, which allows the volunteers to
work with a greater number of children at each site. During the fall semester, each of the seven
Reading Corps sites met twice a week for twelve weeks. Most children choose one out of the
two days per week to come to Reading Corps, while some elect to come on both days. Each
child who comes once a week will have received twelve hours of individual attention over the
semester while the children who come twice a week would receive twenty-four hours of
individual attention.
The Reading Corps program includes a short assessment test to evaluate the progress of the
children who attend. These five to ten minute tests are given once every four weeks, for a total
of three tests per child.
MEASUREMENT
The data collected over the course of the fall and spring semesters is listed below. Please note
that our spring semester is still finishing up during the first weeks of May, so the data is not yet
complete. The progress assessment was implemented first at the Pre-K Reading Corps sites in
the fall semester and then at the K-2 sites starting in the spring semester. In addition, the Pre-K
student sessions are only 30 minutes per child, since the attention spans are not generally as
long in the younger children. However, the current students have shown themselves to be
exceptionally well focused and the summer sessions will spend 45 minutes with each student as
a result.
