Part 1: Community Demographics

My child-care facility is located in high point, NC. My child-cares name is Little Ones
Academy. High point is mainly considered an urban place to live; there are all types of families
living here. My child-care facility will be a place mainly for low class and working class
families. There are many families in which both parents work or are single parent homes, so they
are forced to work full time. My child-care facility would also be available to students because
there are many high schools as well as colleges and universities located in high point around my
child-cares location.
There is a lot of diversity among cultures and races. There are about 52,612 Caucasians,
33,983 African Americans, 8,847 Hispanics, 6,302 Asians, 1,874 mixed races, 436 American
Indians, 279 other races and 38 Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander in High Point. My
child-care facility will have a variety of races, but the majority will be Caucasian. There are other
races that may not speak English at home; statistics show Spanish is the second highest language
spoken at home after English with about 2,328 people speaking it.
In the infants room there are two African American babies and five Caucasian babies.
The young toddlers classroom has two African American toddlers, four Caucasian toddlers, and
one Hispanic toddler. The 3 year olds classroom has two Hispanic children, three African
American children, and four Caucasian children. The four year olds class has one Hispanic child,
five Caucasian children, and two African American children. The five year olds class has six
Caucasian children and one African American child. There are two Down syndrome children in
my facility, one is in the young toddlers classroom and the other child is in the four year olds
classroom.

Part 4: Project Summary
Family is the very first institution you are a part of when you are born. The people you
may consider family may not all be related to you by blood. The meaning of family to me is
those people who love you unconditionally, care for you, are always there for you, and those
who stand by you in good and bad times. For me, I consider those people, who do all those
things for me, my family no matter if they are related to me by blood or not; I still consider them
my family. Now a days there are many types of families which include foster families, families
with gay or lesbian parents, adoptive families, single parent families and many more.
I think that family involvement has a significantly important role in the early years of a
child. When the families participate in their childs school or class the children are more likely to
thrive and reach their full potential in education. The children feel they are special when they see
their families volunteer or participate in school. This special feeling the children may experience
may cause them to enjoy learning and be a success in school. When families are involved, there
is a communication to children about the value of their families. Every child wants to feel pride
in their families, and that pride will influence how the child feels about themselves. As a teacher,
I want to help all families feel accepted in my class. I want to encourage their participation in
class as well as their communication. I want to help the families understand what benefits they
can have when they are involved in their childs school life. I want the families to understand I
am there for them and their children to successfully thrive in education.
One potential barrier is language. Language may cause difficulties in my facility because
Spanish I spoken a lot other than English. Not all my fellow teachers may know how to speak
it. I think that by having a translator around during parent meetings may help a lot. I also
Rubi Hernandez
think that having posters and other materials in class in Spanish will help a great deal. I think
that we as teachers we should offer those parents that may need it English classes and offer
child care services during those classes. Another barrier could be the teen mothers that are
attending school. This could be a barrier because the children may not have a stable schedule
due to the school times and also they may not feel welcomed at the center because of their
education. I think that we should have our doors open to everyone and accept every type of
family. We could offer them resources that help teen mothers with dealing with school stress,
work, and parenting. The third barrier could be that the single parent low income family may
not have time to attend any parent meetings nor volunteer for class activities. A solution to
this barrier could be that I may schedule the meetings at a different time or whatever works
for them. I could also offer activities for the weekends that they could volunteer for with the
family. The demographics impact the content of my survey because there are a variety of
families and not all families are the same nor do they all have the same needs. Just like no
one child is the same, there is no one family the same. I have single parent families, teen
parent families, Hispanic families, African American families, and Caucasian families.
