Independent projects are a process through which teachers and students identify problems or topics of interest to the student. Together, teachers and students plan a method of investigating a problem or topic and identify the product the student will create. It is imperative teachers establish needed criteria for success so students have some guidelines. Students ability and knowledge is shown through the development of this product.
I believe a major independent project (like Zoom Machines) is important for students in the science classroom. It builds on student interest, gives them an outlet for curiosity, encourages independence, prepares their planning and research skills, and many students are more highly motivated during this time. Purpose/Focus of Lesson (the big idea): The purpose of this assignment is to research rubber band powered cars. Students will then use the information they researched to help them build their own rubber band powered car. The lesson incorporates direction writing skills, as well as trial and error process.
This lesson will be completed at the end of the year, after STAAR testing is completed. After the STAAR test, no new content is learned. This gives students the opportunity to use their imaginations and create fun projects without the pressure of homework and testing. We vote on multiple choices for projects including Zoom Machines, rockets, etc. Instruction Grouping: Individual Whole Group Small Group Peer Partners Homogeneous Heterogeneous
What will be differentiated: Content Process Product Learner Elements Involved: Readiness Interest Learning Profile As a result of this lesson what you hope your students will:
Students will Know: how to research, write direction, develop a design sheet, use: hot glue gun, drill, box cutters
Students will Understand: how a rubber band engine will propel a car.
Students will be able to: build their own rubber band powered car.
Pre-assessment: There is not a pre-assessment for this assignment. It is an inquiry assignment so students will research, build, and work through their design; changing car design as necessary. Prior to building their design, students must sign a safety contract and pass a safety quiz.
