Enduring Understanding: Students are able to write stories by using everyday moments from their lives,
past writing and the world around them.
Goal & Objective from the CCSS: W 3.3 Write narrative to develop real or imagined experiences or
events using effective technique, descriptive details and clear event sequences.
I CAN Statement: I can select one of my small moments from my life to write a personal narrative,
using the strategies I have already learned.
Evidence of Student Understanding: Students will recall a small episode from their life that will have
meaning and use it as a seed to produce a personal narrative writing.
Activities:

Teaching point: We as writers can get ideas for writing by playing close attention to our lives.
Content Understanding: When writers want to generate ideas for personal narratives, they must think of turning
points.

Students Moves:

Students will brainstorm and write in their Writers Notebook a list/chart of their personal turning point
moments.
Student will reread their own journal notebook and look for small moments that could be seeds to a personal
narrative.
Students will choose one of those moments and turn it into a personal narrative.
Students will use the already learned strategies for generating narrative writing.
When writing is completed to their satisfaction the students will be encouraged to sit in the authors chair and
share their stories with their classmates, in order to promote pride in their work.
Sometimes I will conference with them along the group discussion to examine choices made.
Students will name and claim the strategies used in their writing.
They will take pictures of their writing and give it to me.

Differentiation Instructions:

Working with struggling students:
I will allow students who struggle with reading to have more time to complete assignments.
Give them more options and have ready a variety writing prompt.
Students with moderate writing skills will be asked to write short stories
Encouraging them to try and do their best.
Paring them with advanced student.
Working with English Learners:
Encouraging them to use dictionaries to look for vocabulary words and terms that may be unfamiliar for
them.
Allowing them to use more maps and graphic organizer, and fewer words.
Providing peer support.
Working with advanced students:
Allowing them to produce different forms of writing
