Chelsea McQuarrie Theme: Listening- 4

th
of July Planning Time: 20 minutes
Level: High Beginner to Intermediate
Topics: Making plans for the 4th of July
Objectives: Listening for specific information. Learning new and relevant vocabulary. Making plans.
Vocabulary:
-Bonfire
- Barbeque (BBQ)
- Sparklers
-Fireworks
-4
th
of July
-Smores
-Bathing suit
-Frisbee
Purpose: The function of this activity is to improve students listening skills. By employing different listening activities, students
better understand how and what to focus on in terms of making plans with someone for 4
th
of July. Listening skills are improved by
listening to a dialogue that could really occur. Students also participate in a vocabulary activity, true or false statements, and a note-
taking exercise all to check comprehension of the dialogue.
Functions and Structures:
Describing and understanding adjectives- Students read adjectives and match cards to the pictures on the board within a group.
Note-taking- Students practice note-taking skills after listening to the dialogue and focus on the important and key information.
True or False- Students check their understanding of details by answering questions regarding the dialogue.
Materials: For this lesson I used a whiteboard to draw pictures of the vocabulary words. Also for the vocabulary portion of the lesson
I used cards with adjectives explaining the vocabulary words (for example: Fireworks- big explosions in the sky, colorful, beautiful).
The dialogue and vocabulary were printed on a handout so the students were able to keep it.

Procedures:
Activity Procedures Time Interaction Purpose of Procedure
Warm
Up/
Vocab
-T draws pictures of the vocabulary words up
on the board and writes the names under the
pictures.
-T then divides the class either into teams,
groups, or pairs (whatever fits the class size
most).
-T hands out cards with adjectives that
describe each vocabulary word at random.
-Ss then work with each other to decide which
picture their adjective cards correspond to and
tapes them on the board next to the
vocabulary word.

The purpose of this procedure is to first of all
teach vocabulary words that are associated
with 4
th
of July. By utilizing the cards with
adjectives, Ss vocabulary is being expanded
and they are learning more about each
vocabulary word through a different method.
By dividing the class, students have to work
together and discuss what they think the
meaning of each word is. Taping the cards up
on the board is effective because students can
refer back to the vocabulary words throughout
the lesson if need be.
Dialogue
1
-After Ss learn the relevant vocabulary they
will hear the dialogue for the first time.
-T reassures class that they will hear the
dialogue again.
-T performs or plays dialogue.

Teacher to
students.
The witnessing of a dialogue improves
students listening skills. By introducing the
vocabulary before the dialogue, students hone
in on relevant information.
Note-
taking
-After Ss hear the dialogue for the first time,
they are given a chart to fill in. The chart
includes the categories of food, entertainment,
and clothing.
-Ss work in pairs and think back to the
dialogue to fill the chart out with the
appropriate words associated with each
category.

The purpose of this activity is that it prompts
the Ss to really think about what they just
heard. It also divides the words into categories
so that they understand better the
characteristics of 4
th
of July.

-The dialogue is played or performed again
for the Ss allowing them to fill in their charts

By the dialogue being played or performed for
a second time, Ss pick up more detail and tune
into the relevant and key vocabulary to the
note-taking activity.
