Lesson 5

Lesson: Germanys Path to War (Part 4)

Objective: Students will be able to explain the actions Hitler took that led Germany to war.
They will also be able to explain what Britain and France did in response to Hitlers actions,
particularly the policy of appeasement. Students will present their storyboards to the class,
and will participate in a discussion on appeasement.
Common Core Standards:
10.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources,
attending to such features as the date and origin of the information.
10.2 Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide
an accurate summary of how key events or ideas develop over the course of the text.
10.3 Analyze in detail a series of events described in a text; determine whether earlier
events caused later ones or simply preceded them.
10.7 Integrate quantitative or technical analysis (e.g., charts, research data) with qualitative
analysis in print or digital text.
Materials: Completed storyboards, tablets, SmartBoard, computer
Directions: Students should be finished with their storyboards. Tell students they will be
presenting their storyboards to the class. Because they were done on ComicMaker HD,
they can be displayed on the SmartBoard for everyone to see. Each pair presents their
storyboards and describes what is taking place in each of the ten boxes. As each pair
finishes, they turn in their planning sheets and turn their storyboards in on the class
website.
After everyone presents, lead the class in a discussion of Germanys path to war. Begin by
asking what common themes or key points were in the storyboards, and keep the
discussion going from there. At the end, everyone should be very familiar with
appeasement and Germanys path to war.
