South Carolina Secedes & Abolition
State Standard: 3-4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in antebellum period, the
causes and effects of the Civil War, and the impact of Reconstruction in South Carolina.
Indicator: 3-4.3 Explain the reasons for South Carolinas secession from the Union, including the
abolitionist movement and the concept of states rights.

Learning Objective: The student will be able to write about the steps that led to the secession of South
Carolina.

Essential Question: Why did South Carolina secede from the Union?

Assessment: The student will complete a graphic organizer on the secession of South Carolina. The
teacher will check for 3 main points with three sub-points. The teacher will record accuracy/completion
and record in an anything chart.

Activities/Procedures:
Opening: The teacher will review the term abolitionist and ask students what abolitionist they
remember hearing about before.
Activities: The teacher will model the creation of a graphic organizer using the Promethean
board. Students will add to the graphic organizer throughout the lesson.
The teacher will use Causes of the Civil War flipchart to help provide information for students.
The flipchart includes graphics of abolitionists and maps to aid student learning.
Closing: The teacher will review key terms while adding them to the Social Studies word wall.

Accommodations:
ESL: The teacher will use illustrations to convey key ideas.
Special Education: The teacher will use illustrations to convey key ideas.
Early Finishers: The students may choose an assignment from the social studies challenge box, read
silently, finish work, or take an AR test.

Materials: terms written on sentence strips, paper for graphic organizer, Promethean board, pencil,
flipchart including graphics

Questioning:
1) Create a picture describing the events leading to the secession of South Carolina.

2) Why did South Carolinians depend on slaves? How did that lead to the secession?
(Applying)
3) Did the South have a good enough reason to secede? Why or why not? (Evaluating)



Lesson 10 Assessment
The student will create and fill in a graphic organizer containing information about the causes of
the Civil War (pertaining to South Carolina). The teacher will grade the students based on points
included in the graphic organizer. The teacher will record grade in the gradebook and in an anything
chart.
