Antebellum Flipbook (Part 3) State Standard: 3-4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in antebellum period, the causes and effects of the Civil War, and the impact of Reconstruction in South Carolina. Indicator: 3-4.1 Compare the economic conditions for various classes of people in South Carolina, including the elite, the middle class, the lower class, the independent farmers, and the enslaved and free African Americans.
Learning Objective: The student will be able to create a flipbook about the antebellum period including details from each social class.
Essential Question: How did daily life differ for the various classes of people in South Carolina?
Assessment: The student will complete flipbook sections about the lower class and enslaved of the antebellum south. The teacher will check each section for five correct main points under each heading and record in the gradebook. The student will also complete comprehension questions about the social system. The teacher will check for correctness and record grade in gradebook/anything chart.
Activities/Procedures: Opening: The teacher will ask students questions about the previous classes. The teacher will give students premade flipbooks. The class will read the text aloud. The teacher will have students pick details out of the text (reading sheets) to include in the flipbook. The teacher will model the creation of the flipbook using the elmo cam. The students will cover information for the lower class and the enslaved. Students will view pictures in the textbook for visuals. Closing: The students will also complete the questions and answers on the reading sheets. The students will draw pictures for each social class. The students will turn in their flipbooks.
Accommodations: ESL: The teacher will define uncommon words or phrases. The teacher will break down longer words into more easily spelled segments. The teacher will model the creation of the flipbook. Special Education: The teacher will break down longer words into more easily spelled segments. The teacher will model the creation of the flipbook. Early Finishers: The early finishers may complete an activity from the challenge box, read a book, or take an AR test.
Questioning: 1) Create a skit representing one of the social classes. Early Finishers task (Creating) 2) Was life better for the lower class or the enslaved people? Why? Lesson 2, 4, & 5 Sample Assessment As the students complete the flipbook, the teacher will check daily to make sure students have completed the task. A final grade will be given upon completion.
