Aim: How did the Renaissance affect Europe?

Motivation 8 Min
Do Now: Create a T-chart in your notebook; label one column Medieval Art and one
column Renaissance Art. List the characteristics of Medieval and Renaissance
artwork.

Students will be shown a slide show that depicts the differences in Medieval and
Renaissance art. Students will be instructed to create a t-chart in their notebook.
While students view the slideshow, they will write down characteristics of the
artwork from both time periods.

Procedure 10 Min

Students will be given a set of guided notes. Students will fill in their notes using
information presented through Prezi.

Pivotal Questions
What was the Renaissance?
What intellectual movement was at the heart of the Renaissance?
How did the Renaissance influence European life?
How did the printing press affect Europe?

Activity 22 Min

After students are done taking notes, they will be broken up into groups of three to
four students. Each group will be given one of four document based questions. The
documents will focus on how the printing press affected Europe. After five minutes
the groups will switch documents, until a total of 20 minutes has passed and each
group received all four documents. Dry erase markers will be given to the students
to allow them to mark up the document. Students will underline the main idea and
circle any unfamiliar words in the document. Students will have guided questions
that address each of the four documents. Students will collaborate with one another
to examine, interpret, and answer questions pertaining to the documents.

Closure 5 Min

After students complete the stations activity, they will look to the summary question
at the bottom of their notes. Students will answer the question and hand it in as an
exit slip. The exit slip will be used as a form of informal assessment.
Homework

Students will be given a Protestant Reformation reading. They will use the reading
to answer eight questions. The homework will provide a basic platform for the
following class. Students will need to connect how the Renaissance led to the
Protestant Reformation.
