24 and ask children to try to count the ten trees.

Teacher will show students ten sticks. She will say I need help counting all these sticks I found
on my way to school.
Teacher will ask children to help her count as she holds up each stick 1-10. (Teacher may also
count in Spanish)
Teacher will show children the zip lock bags that she has in three different sizes. She will ask
children to notice one bag says small, another medium and the biggest bag says large.
Teacher will ask a child to help her find one big or large stick
Teacher will ask a child to help her find a medium stick
Teacher will ask a child to find a small stick

Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or independently)
Children will work in a small group with a teacher counting and sorting the sticks. They will use
the zip lock bags to sort the sticks into the three categories: small, medium and large. Children will
be encouraged to measure with other sticks and explore how or why one stick is larger or shorter
than another.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)
Children will be given small zip lock bags to take home and fill with sticks, twigs of leaves. They
should write the number to match the amount they find. (1-10)
Children will work with parents to find a stick or leave that is the same size as their hand. They
will share during circle time what they found.

Method of assessing childrens
understanding of
lesson/activity/objective(s)

Teacher will assess children through
anecdotal records, recording of
children performing counting and
Pre-assessment
Prior to activity children have
counted bears in the classroom
math area, they have also
sorted the bears by size and
color.

Teachers will observe children
and note if they are counting with
accuracy.
Are the children following
directions when you ask them to
pick up five sticks?
Are the children playing games
with the sticks and counting on
their won?
Are the children talking to peers
about the size of food, toys, sticks,
or any other objects? Example: My
tower is bigger, my chicken is
smaller, my hand is the same size
as yours, etc.
