According to the Teaching Strategies Checkpoint Assessment some of the children in my class are below age level in these two skills. Timeframe Activity will last 20 minutes. Teacher will read Trees Count (By Trish Holland) Pages 1-12 During the read aloud teacher will count along and point to the objects in the story: One tree, two seeds, three pecans, etc. After the read aloud we will look at the pictures and numbers again. Teacher will turn to page

Teacher will show students ten sticks. She will say I need help counting all these sticks I found on my way to school. Teacher will ask children to help her count as she holds up each stick 1-10. (Teacher may also count in Spanish) Teacher will show children the zip lock bags that she has in three different sizes. She will ask children to notice one bag says small, another medium and the biggest bag says large. Teacher will ask a child to help her find one big or large stick Teacher will ask a child to help her find a medium stick Teacher will ask a child to find a small stick
Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or independently) Children will work in a small group with a teacher counting and sorting the sticks. They will use the zip lock bags to sort the sticks into the three categories: small, medium and large. Children will be encouraged to measure with other sticks and explore how or why one stick is larger or shorter than another. Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps) Children will be given small zip lock bags to take home and fill with sticks, twigs of leaves. They should write the number to match the amount they find. (1-10) Children will work with parents to find a stick or leave that is the same size as their hand. They will share during circle time what they found.

Teachers will observe children and note if they are counting with accuracy. Are the children following directions when you ask them to pick up five sticks? Are the children playing games with the sticks and counting on their won? Are the children talking to peers about the size of food, toys, sticks, or any other objects? Example: My tower is bigger, my chicken is smaller, my hand is the same size as yours, etc.
