Foreword
This English-Russian-English Archaeology Field Dictionary arose from
increased cooperation between Ukrainian and foreign archaeologists over
recent years. Every summer is the time of joint archaeological expeditions with
participation by colleagues from academic institutes in Ukraine, Russia, USA,
Italy, Great Britain, France, Poland, and other countries. Crimean museums
organized exhibitions of their treasures abroad. Ukrainian scholars work in
research centers and libraries in Western Europe and the USA. More and more
Russian and English speakers meet at scholarly conferences in Ukraine, Russia,
and Western Europe. Scientific publications of the former Soviet Union, present
Russia and Ukraine attract greater attention from Western colleagues, while at
the same time Western publications have become more available to us.
Needless to say, English is the language of international communication. For
archaeology, this is not only the case of direct communication at conferences,
in institutes, or during excavations in the field, but also for communication
via publications at scholarly journals, monographs, Internet and e-mail. The
scholarship of both Russian and English archaeological work has elaborate
systems of terminology that are missing in standard dictionaries. In order to
realize fruitful scholarly and pedagogical contacts, researchers require a quick
search method for an equivalent to necessary archaeological term. It is my hope
that this dictionary will make its contribution to solving linguistic problems for
the dynamically developing science of archaeology.
The novelty of this publication lies primarily in its concept: the dictionary
is aimed for practical use during fieldwork, that is to say during direct
communication with other scholars. Accordingly, the authors aim was to
select and include into the dictionary terms that are most widely used in the
practical language of archaeologists. The dictionary also contains terminology
of adjoining disciplines of history, architecture, conservation, numismatics,
museum studies, and others that is widely used by archaeologists, and also
words that are absolutely necessary for communication in the field (i. e. names
of tools, human bones, materials, etc.), as well as popular archaeological jargon.
The structure of the dictionary is similar to that of phrase books to help the
user not only find the translation of a term, but also phonetic transcription and
pronunciation. The small size and pocket format make the use of the book easier
in the field.
This dictionary is addressed, first of all, to students of Crimea, which is why
it includes terms to characterise the variety of archaeological heritage of the
peninsula, peoples, and cultures that existed in the territory of Crimea from
Stone Age to Mediaeval period. Many words and phrases cited in this book
are so specific, that they can hardly be found in standard printed or electronic
English-Russian dictionaries. Hopefully, this dictionary will be useful for not
only professional archaeologists, but also for historians, conservators, students,
as well as interpreters.
The methods used to compile the dictionary include: researching the best
archaeological dictionaries published in Great Britain and the USA (for English
terminology), Russia and Ukraine (for Russian terminology); analysing works
on the classification of archaeological materials issued in English and Russian
languages; selecting terms from archaeological scholarship; studying dictionaries
of adjacent disciplines (architecture and warfare in particular); and consultations
with local and foreign experts. The difference between existing English and
Russian archaeological classifications, as well as the presence of terms in every
language that are absent in the other one, are taken into consideration. Generally
iv
used words have been cross-checked with other dictionaries. Both printed and
digital sources have been studied.
The first edition of this book was published about two years ago, in a small
number of copies, and was distributed in a few months. Since that time, I had
been continuing my work of studying and collecting special lexicon. In result,
the decision has been made to enlarge the dictionary with new terms that
describe, in particular, architecture, archaeological conservation, ancient glass
and pottery. Many dictionary entries have become bigger in size, some misprints
and shortcomings, which have been discovered, are eliminated now. The new
edition of the dictionary keeps its former structure. It consists of two parts,
English-Russian and Russian-English, each containing about 4,000 entries.

Acknowledgements
I would like to express my most deep gratitude to all those people who
assisted and supported this project, without which this work would never have
been imagined, much less realized. Above all, I wish to thank the Institute of
Classical Archaeology of the University of Texas as Austin and the Packard
Humanities Institute for bringing this work to life. Much of the conceptual
work of this dictionary was made possible in 2003 by a grant from the
Autonomous Republic of Crimea for junior scholars in the humanities.
In 1996, Vladimir Vlasov (Simferopol) first suggested that I compile an
English-Russian archaeological dictionary. At that moment, I had already
encountered significant problems with translations of archaeological articles
due to inadequate terminology in most dictionaries. However, writing of the
dictionary then was an unthinkable task due to other factors. These obstacles
were mainly overcome thanks to my English teachers: Nataliya Radochina
(Tauric National University, Simferopol), and Jonathan Eagles and Judith N.
Rasson (Central European University, Budapest), who greatly expanded my
vocabulary and put it into organised form.
I must acknowledge special thanks to Glenn R. Mack (Austin), whose
continuous and comprehensive support, as well as his energy, organisational
skill, and benevolence, made this publication possible. I am very grateful
to Julia Ryzhova (Sevastopol), for she took the trouble to read the text of
the dictionary, showed me its shortcomings, added many important terms,
and expressed several considerations on the structure of the work, which
are accepted thankfully. Considerable assistance to my work was given
by Lucy Grinenko (Sevastopol). Many important terms were also offered
by colleagues and friends of mine: Nataliya Ginkut (Sevastopol), Irina
Zavadskaya (Simferopol), Daniil Kostromichyov (Sevastopol), Lyudmila
Ryzhova (Sevastopol), and many others. The last but not the least, it is a
particularly pleasant duty to pay my special tribute to my parents, Lyudmila
and Igor, for their various help which was never restricted to working with
terminology only.
None of those who are mentioned above are responsible for the mistakes
made in the text: all the errors and omissions in this dictionary must be my
own.

American variants of writing terms are indicated as: Amer. Spoken forms
are indicated as: . or spoken.
In case of class of the word does not coincide with that of its equivalent in
the other language (or vice versa), there is necessary mark standing after the
word. In the same way verbs government (preposition, particle) is shown if
it differs in two languages. All such marks are italicized.
In compound terms, slash / separates interchangeable words, e. g.:
/ . If word or words in brackets are not italicized, this is
the case of the word(s) may be used as a part of the term, e. g.: (
) .
The Appendix contains additional explanations for the measuring systems
used in English and Russian traditions.
