UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 3 of 19
Introduction
Personal Professional Development emphasizes on the needs of the individual. It enables the
individual to build on their existing skills to enhance current performances and develop new skills for
their future personal and professional development.
Self-development is personal development, with the person taking primary responsibility for his/her
own learning and choosing the means to achieve this. Professional Development is the knowledge and
the skills an individual achieves to maximize his/her progress in his/her own organization.
In this assignment I will be looking at what is included in Personal Professional Development and
what is needed to required completing a self-assessment on myself.
Furthermore I have also deduced approaches to self-managed learning and how this could improve
lifelong learning in a personal and a professional context, and how applying this will help an
individual and to an organization for its progress.

UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 4 of 19
LO1
P1.1 Approaches to Self Managed learning

The following approaches are what I selected for self-managed learning. These approaches are good
approaches but also have its own cost.
Secondments

Secondments are a strategy where employees are made to swap their post with each other,
within the organization. This process provides benefits to both employees and to the
organization (Neil, nd).

There are many benefits of job rotation to the individual as well as to the organization.
This includes helping the individual to explore their hidden interest, talents, knowledge and
other skills. It also encourages the employee to deal with new challenges which will
improve his/her self-confidence. Moreover this will make the employee valuable to the
employer as his/her overall knowledge about the organization will be enhanced
In addition to this, the communication skills also improve by dealing with different
colleagues from different departments.
The management will be able to identify the hidden talents of the employees, through which
they can align the employees competencies with requirements of the organization.
Furthermore during times of employee shortage, those slots can be filled since all the
employees know what is being done in different departments.
This also comes with cost, as time and money is invested to carry out trainings. The time of
the managers and other qualified employees of the particular department are required for
the training sessions. However a great concerned related to effective training programs is
that some employees are appointed to designations which does not fit to them.
Use of internet

Internet is one of the most valuable sources for information and communication. An individual can
enhance his/her knowledge in a required field using the information available on internet.
Any time anywhere we want we can do research with the help of information available from the
internet (Markus et al, n.d). Although internet is resourceful, we cannot completely rely on internet as
some of the data are not authentic and will mislead one in terms of newly acquired information.
Since the invention of internet and development of new technological services time is saves since
many mails and other data is transferred via internet mail servers.
The most deleterious cost of surfing internet for self-managed learning during office hours is that, it
will make the works of the employees inefficient and slow. It is clearly evident as it showed in a study
that largest proportion of non-work related time was spend on internet (Salary.com, 2014)

UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 5 of 19
Coaching

Coaching is referred as conducting development trainings by a qualified person who will assist the
learner in achieving specific personal or professional competencies or objectives.

This is one of the most successful approaches as this will help the individual to identify his/her
weakness and can act on strengthening them with the feedback received. Furthermore this will help
the individual by asking questions to clarify the doubts. Also it leads to the moral connected of
employee to organization and employee growth and development (Luanne Kelchne, n.d).

Coaching is an important to organization as it helps the employee to stay focused and understand the
priorities of the organization and achieve organizational goals (Luanne Kelchne, n.d).

Research shows that when managers invest time and energy in coaching, their employees are more
satisfied engaged and committed. Employees are also more effective and retention goes up. Managers
who coach and develop employees are also perceived as better leaders. Effective coaching provides
significant benefits to all parties that involved

When we compare the three approaches, compared to internet it shows that coaching and secondments
connect the employee directly to the organization. Internet mostly will give information regarding
specific idea. It does not give feedback to the person who is using it compared to coaching and
secondments. Moreover by means of secondments it will help the individual to gain multiple skills
which will further be useful for his/her self and to the organization.
Besides depending on circumstances all these approaches are equally important to self-managed
learning despite of the cost and disadvantages. To become personally and professionally developed
individual and organization these approaches are worth to accomplish.
P1.2 Ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional context could
be encouraged

Lifelong learning can be defined as learning throughout the life. Lifelong learning is also an ongoing
process. This could be encouraged by both personally and professionally. Some of the ways that I use
in lifelong learning are by
Gaining Knowledge
Gaining knowledge generates a possibility to be more informative and more sensible about an
individuals self and about his/her organization. Personally reading articles, magazine, trade journal
and watching TV improve the knowledge about many different subjects.
According to Brian Tracy
If you read an hour a day, one book per week, you will be an expert in your field within
three years
Reading has its two main benefits. One being gaining new information and other is improvement in
reading and writing skills. Moreover reading and watching TV helps to gain information for
professional development. This is by reading job related articles and watching job related TV
programs.
UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 6 of 19
Gaining new knowledge about dealing with other surely brings good results personally and in
organizational levels. Moreover trying to learn about the objectives of the organization and its main
purpose and related other idea can make a huge difference professionally.
Positive Attitudes
Attitude of a person plays an important role in connecting with the world around us (Ryan lowe,
2012). If attitude is positive then connection are very easily made. Attitude is a form of expression
where one can chose to be happy or negative. Positive attitude leads to better mental wellbeing and
gives resilience in work environment (Julie Boehlke, 2014).
Displaying positive attitude in work environment will lead to positive environment in the
organization. Positive attitude is quite related to emotions that we have in out life.
Emotions:
Emotions deal with feeling related to various personal and work related experiences and the extent to
which how we manage then. Personally managing emotions lead to positive energy and this is very
important in organization as we are working with many people who have different issues of their own.
Always thinking positively will help suppress negative emotions.
Whilst any learning will usually involve a mixture of the three areas outlined above, Distinguishing
between these three approaches help me to analyze my learnings. In addition to this it helps me to
encourage my learning abilities.

P1.3 Self-managed learning

Self-managed learning is referred to an individual finding his/or her methods to gain knowledge and
enhance his/her skills. Self-managed learning helps to set goals. By doing evaluations and further
researches to find new ways to learn will create an easier path to achieve the goal (Aisha.Dawn,
2013).

By self-managed learning an individual gets opportunities to explore their own approaches in
learning, which will assist them to face challenges, completing projects and apply this knowledge in
their personal and professional development needs.

Moreover self-directed learning also help an individual to enhance critical thinking, curiosity, quality
of understanding, motivation and confidence. Furthermore it helps in better decision making which
will help the person to improve personally and professionally. The employees will be self-motivated
and confident when undertaking the responsibility of the tasks in their job. In addition to this, it will
be easier for them to achieve the organizational objectives.

Employees who undertake self-managed learning will establish their maximum effort to apply what
they learn to meet their organizational standards. Also, organizations having employees who make use
of self-managed learning will help the organization to minimize the expenses spent to train their
employees.

Most of the leading organization search for employees who have broad experience through lifelong
learning. Likewise job promotion and other benefits of professional life will be much broader to
people as mentioned. This is because it is believed as the employees are the ones who represent the
organization, and these employees should be knowledgeable, skillful and experienced in order to
achieve organization objectives.

P3.1 Process to Implement Action plan

Activities to Implement Action Plan

The first thing which should be done in implementing Action plan is to be obvious about the goals.
This is because the target can only be achieved if there is a plan worth of a challenge. Setting up
smaller goals and achieving them will guide to plan and accomplish much larger goals. Have to be
strong with strong commitments.

Fear is the main emotion that leads to failure in whatever we do. It is very important not to make fear
an obstacle for things we do. The best way to get rid of fear is facing them. This can be achieved by
getting exposure in public social events which will make someone more open and confident (Noam,
2010).

Emotions resembling excitements and positive thinking are great motivational step to go forward with
implementing action plan. This is a precaution from losing hope.

Reading is an important activity to gain knowledge and improve communication skills. It is also vital
in finding better jobs which require reading skills in many areas (Glenn et al, n.d)

Moreover this also improves ones vocabulary. Vocabulary is very important for successful
communication. Reading improves ones self-development, but it comes with a price, time. Moreover
reading cannot be carried out during busy office schedule. Reading and browsing internet at office
hours will influence organizational objectives.

Searching internet is also an activity for this as it is the most efficient way in getting knowledge and
opinions of other people regarding different matters. However there are disadvantages when taking
and understanding information from the internet. As, not all information retrieved from the internet is
authentic.

Seeking intensive guidance from qualified and experience people will increase ones confident and
knowledge. This is an essential activity because this will help gain wisdom and confidence from their

success stories. However other people are and for them to give time to be attached to them mmight
be difficult.

Revising previous mistakes and avoiding them instead of giving up will help to reach the goal after
failed attempts.

Action plan, process of implementation and activity designing helps to understand ones goals which
were never known to be in existence before. By designing an action plan and trying to implement the
plan improves many aspect of ones personal and professional development.
By implementing and achieving these objectives it will help to increase interpersonal skills within the
organization. In addition to all this professional development skills will help to perform well in
aspects such as managing projects and interactions with clients.

P3.2 Personal and Professional Development Journal
As per the Action plan my first objective was to improve my self-confidence by the end of 2014. The
first attempt to achieve this was to search the internet, and read the articles on self- confidence. Then
by interaction with people who have strong self-confidence. After doing this I listed down all the
ideas and then I implemented these ideas.

After doing this I realized how important it is for me to improve my self-confidence. I felt that it was
vital to succeed and achieve my goals in future. And also I understood that, due to lack of self-
confidence many opportunities were lost or ignored.
Choosing Improving self-confidence as my action plan for this assignment is one of the most
beneficial decision, as it provided me an easy path to work on my next tasks.
To review and check the improvements I also asked feedbacks from my supervisors and my
colleagues.

This helped me recognize some of my true skills which I have never knew I ever had. Moreover I
understood about the skills that I have to improve. I was able to deal with people and make my own
decisions. And all this lead me to be more lively and enthusiastic.

My second objective was improving communication skills by the end of 2014. I took this as one of
my objective as this is very important for my profession as I work in sales and client department. To
improve communication skills my first attempt is to read novels and journals on internet to improve
my vocabulary. I watched lots of my favorite series and movies to improve my accent and my
speaking skills. As my self-confidence level has improved from the first objective I took initiative in
giving presentations during sales meetings. This improved my communication skill as I get to answer
the questions from my colleagues and explain them the problems.

I searched and read a lot of articles on the internet. Mostly it was internet and none of library books
were referred, as there wasnt enough time.

My third objective is a long term objective, which I will be achieving by late 2014. That is getting
more information about insurance field and experiences. In order to achieve this objective I have to
attend seminars and trainings conducted by the company more often. And now as I am doing
Associate Degree in Business Management I will be learning business strategies which will help me
to perform successfully achieving my objectives.
UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 13 of 19

This action plan is helping me to think out of the box and come out of my comfort zone.
P3.3 Relevant recommendations

Self-confidence can be increased by focusing on another aspect of you that can take attention away
from the negative one. This can be further enhanced by more preparation, getting more educated and
by doing researches on specific subject that have to be used in daily life.
By making more use of new vocabulary during conversations with friends and colleagues will help to
increase Communication skill, with the feedbacks received from them. In addition to this giving
speeches and writing blogs will also help enrich communication skills.
Improving knowledge about insurance products can be useful in enhancing idea about job related task
and also by doing an advanced course on the subject

LO4
P 4.1 Solutions to work based problems

Open-ended problem

Third party Motor insurance was made mandatory in Maldives under the Maldivian Law effective
from 12
th
October 2014.
Being the most trusted and the only 100% local insurance company in Maldives, most of the citizens
who own motor vehicles rushed to Allied Insurance Company to make their insurance done before the
deadline. The company was not expecting a huge flow of customer within a short period of time.
Employees and resources were limited and the company was physically unprepared. All the
departments got involved in insurance process leaving all their assigned works behind.
Due to this large complications raised and to solve this whole management and senior staffs discussed
for a better plan.
Identified Solution
1. Recruiting temporary staffs
2. Introducing online portal
3. Road shows for easy insurance access
4. Sending teams to each and every island in Maldives
5. Sending teams to Capital of Atolls in Maldives to create a hub
6. Allocate customer service only for motor insurance
7. Introducing automatic signature
8. Service partners

Eliminated Solutions
1. Sending teams to each and every island in Maldives
2. Allocate customer service only for motor insurance

Among the solutions discussed some of them were considered and some of them were eliminated
identifying and assessing the degree of feasibility.

Recruiting temporary staffs helped to speed up the process and introducing automatic signature made
the procedure more efficient.

Introducing online portal and associating with numerous Service Partners will provide convenience of
obtaining the service. Online portal is mainly focused to the people working in government and
corporate offices under hectic schedules. Service partners selected are mostly parties who are
operating garages and vehicle maintenances places. This will help the customers who visit these
places to get their insurance done on the spot.

UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 15 of 19
One of the main objectives in considering road show was to provide a hassle free platform for customers to
acquire third party motor insurance and to market the product.

Sending teams to capitals of Atolls made easier for the customers in the Atolls to get the services with less
price, as they do not have to come to Male or seek help from other in Male to get the insurance done.

Sending teams to each and every island in Maldives was inconvenient as it is an expensive and time
consuming process.

Assigning the whole customer service to motor insurance will make it difficult for gaining market for
other insurance products of the company. Since there were customers who wanted to know about
other products.

Moreover with the solution made and looking back to previous issues, the company perfectly handled
the rush in renewing the insurance policies of year 2012 in year 2013 and provides an excellent
service to the customers.

Close-ended problem

On 6
th
March 2014, a special ceremony was held to sign a new insurance policy named
"Contractors all Risks" with Hotels and Resorts Construction PVT LTD at Allied Insurance Corporate
Office.
The insurance policy was planned to sign by Managing Director of Allied Insurance Company and
Chairman of Hotels and Resorts Construction PVT LTD.
The project was a huge step for the company worth 170 million dollars. All the board members, senior
staffs and media were called.
Everything went smooth so far, until few hours before the time of the ceremony a call came from
Managing Director of Allied to the event organizer informing that he had a family emergency and
cannot make it to the ceremony.
All the event organizing team gathered together to discuss about a backup plan.
The event cannot be rescheduled as all the preparations are done and the company could not take the
risk of losing its dignity in front a dedicated client and media.
With all the consequences, the team decided to proceed with the one and only solution. The tasks of
the managing director were handed over to the General Manager of the company to take the
responsibility on his behalf.

UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 16 of 19
P 4.3 Time Management strategies

Time management is an important aspect of achieving desired goals and become a successful. To
pursue these goals is to implement time management strategies in action.
According to Peter Drucker
The most efficient way to produce anything is to bring together under one management as
many as possible of the activities needed to turn out the product
Two of the most efficient time management strategies are briefly described below:
Prioritizing workloads
Prioritization is an important skill needed to make the best use of the efforts of an individual in
performing specific important task. Prioritization can be done by organizing the tasks and allocating
the time to accomplish the tasks, whereby attending to the important task first and leaving behind
the less important tasks to do later. By doing this the employee will gain set of skills to attend to
much important tasks and the organization will be able to achieve goals at a faster rate.
However this also have its draw back. It might be difficult for someone to find out which task will
be more important. Since task importance will be different for different people of the organization.
Furthermore while performing task which are important it puts the employee in great pressure of
deadlines.
Reliable estimates of task time
By allocating and assigning timing or deadline for specific task can help employee and organization
to estimate the time required to finish a specific task. This helps the organization to manage
employee works and gives an overall progress estimation.
Although we estimate time for tasks, it might be more than what we estimated. This is because of
distractions that we face while in work or while doing a personal task.

UNIT 13 - Personal professional Development Assignment Page 17 of 19
Conclusion
By completing this assignment I got an impression to move forward with my career, and an idea of
how to achieve my personal and professional objectives.
Creating a SWOT analysis helped me to identify my current and lacking skills. By designing the
action plan and by implementing the methods helped me in achieving my objectives. Furthermore this
action plan will help me to reshape my current future goals and achieve them.
Moreover the importance of self-managed learning and lifelong learning were outlined by doing the
tasks. An idea of solving complex problems with different justifications and applying different
concepts to solve these problems has been understood. In addition to this generating ideas and
applying policies to find appropriate results have been understood. Likewise importance of time
management skills also has been explored. Overall the whole research and data collection lead to
positive reinforcement of improving my self
