Gov. Thompson will tour the state oI Michigan on June 18, to celebrate the one-year anniversary oI the
American Medical Association`s important decision to Iormally recognize obesity as a disease. Gov.
Thompson wants to raise awareness about the obesity and the need to use all oI the tools necessary to
Iight this epidemic. Treating obesity early is much less expensive than treating many obesity-related
chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, and could lower the overall cost oI health
care.
Director Haveman will be speaking on the obesity epidemic in Michigan and sharing his plans, vision and
goals Ior our state. He will also promote the Michigan Health and Wellness, 4 X 4 plan, a tool designed to
assist Michiganders in their quest to adopt health as a personal core value and adopt a more Iit and healthy
liIestyle. Governor Rick Snyder helped shape the State`s vision during his Health and Wellness Message:
