This summer course will focus on building the fundamental skills necessary to be a confident
student of English. We will Read, analyze, and discuss a novel, short fiction and poetry. Students will
write a formal analytical essay, and theyll also write creative and personal responses to the fiction.
Students will also deliver two presentations about the texts, and they will be quizzed on vocabulary
pulled from the Readings and comprehension of the texts.

Students will be expected to, as I will frequently repeat, do whats in their control while striving to
improve in areas that are less in their control; this is the essence of respectful behavior and the key
to a successful summer session. I expect that students will participate in the class discussions,
furiously make notes in their notebooks, or offer their eyes to the participant.

Students should be on time and prepared for every class. Students will earn a zero for the day if
they arrive late and/or unprepared. They will work diligently to honor the posted deadlines for the
submission of written work. Delinquent assignments will drop one letter grade per day (including
weekends). Lastly, each student is responsible for making up quizzes, keeping up with homework
assignments, and copying notes when class time is missed.
