Implementing iRespond, a student response system in the classroom can provide assistance to both the student and teacher. The students would be excited to use a hand-held mobile device in order to complete quizzes and interact through polling exercises. Teachers would appreciate the instant feedback and compilation of data aspects of the student response system. Student response systems are discussed by Roblyer; he states, Teachers use the systems to engage students and check comprehension. (2013, p. 153). He also discusses that there is software available for students to use their cell phones to respond, instead of a hand-held device provided by the district. (Roblyer, 2013, p. 157) This would alleviate many costs, such as purchasing, maintenance, and replacement. As the iRespond student response systems break or become outdated, the district should replace them with Bring Your Own Device student response software. The standards that will be addressed in the student response systems project are the Georgia Performance Standards for World History; SSWH16 The student will demonstrate an understanding of long-term causes of World War I and its global impact by identifying the causes of the war, describing conditions on the war front for soldiers, explaining the major decisions made in the Versailles Treaty, and analyzing the destabilization of Europe in the collapse of the great empires. The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers will be covered by the application of the Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments standard where, Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS S. content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching (ISTE, 2008).
The iRespond student response system will be used to evaluate the students reading comprehension of the WWI chapter in their textbook. After students read chapter twenty nine in their text, they would take a reading quiz. Since the iRespond student response system gives instantaneous feedback, students and teachers can assess the data immediately after the quiz. After the data is obtained a teacher can gauge which portions of the standards need to retaught. The data will ultimately lead to greater comprehension and higher chance of student success on the WWI Unit Test. .
