You may only bring in a one-sided A4 sheet of notes. No texts. A dictionary will be
acceptable.

Essay structure
Introduction :
1 sentence summarising the essay question
1 sentence expanding upon the topic/text
1 sentence going through the order of your points (essay map)
Body (3 paragraphs):
P topic sentence, introducing what the paragraph is all about
E explain any terms or expand upon your point (here you could give some background on
what you are about to give evidence for)
E Evidence provide evidence and then prove your point, so explain how your evidence
shows your point.
R resolve your paragraph, similarly to what you write in your topic sentence (P).
Conclusion:
1 Sentence to summarise your whole point again (try to make this slightly different to your
introduction)
1-2 sentences briefly going over the point that you have covered and things you have found
out
Finish on a concluding statement, showing the reader you are right and have proved your
point.

Handy Hints
1. Dont refer to yourself in essays (i.e. dont use the word I)
2. Make sure you back up your points with evidence (where you can, say where the quote is
from)
3. Use other words than the word get
4. Refer to texts in present tense (i.e. The Landlady is not The Landlady was)
5. Underline titles of texts
6. Remember its all about HOW and WHY
