The Mastery of Teaching Institute Guidelines
The Mastery of Teaching Institute is a unique faculty development opportunity for full-time faculty at TCC. The Institute is geared
toward faculty who wish to research, implement, and analyze results of a new pedagogical skill in their classroom.

Participant Profile

The Faculty member must:
Understand Qualitative and Quantitative research techniques.
Teach at least one on-ground class.
Desire to improve his or her teaching skill set.
Commit to the program for its complete duration (1 years).
Work in a collaborative environment with other instructors.
Share lessons learned with other faculty members.

Goal

To enhance pedagogical content knowledge and a deeper understanding of the relationship between knowledge of
subject, pedagogy, students and curriculum as they apply to the enhancement of student understanding and learning.

Objectives

1. Learn to promote collaboration and common purpose: Create a classroom learning culture that is built on a
common sense of purpose and enables students with differing interests and capacities to contribute.

2. Learn to use assessment techniques that enable learning: Utilize frequent and formative assessments to map
progress and enable new learning.

3. Learn methods for providing learning ladders: Enable students to build on what they already know and can do.
Provide tools and knowledge for students to connect past and present learning to build new skills and learning.

4. Learn to promote higher order thinking: Identify methods to help students combine facts and ideas in ways that
enable them to recognize relationships, interpret, reach conclusions and arrive at new understandings.

5. Learn methods for engaging and motivating students: Recognize that students self-concept and motivation
affect learning. Utilize strategies that engage students interests and build their confidence.

6. Use strategies to support team work and collaborative learning: Utilize teaching strategies that encourage
students to work and learn together.

7. Increase knowledge of student: Increase knowledge of student conceptions, misconceptions and possible
difficulties about a particular topic and their ability to diagnose and eliminate misconceptions and difficulties
effectively.
8. Learn methods for providing sufficient opportunities to learn: Encourage students to practice what they have
learned. Use a variety of strategies targeted to specific learning purposes and needs.

Overview and Time Requirements

1. Two faculty members from each campus will be chosen by Selection Committee made up of members of TFA
Advisory Council.

2. The faculty will meet as a cohort with the Institute once a month, unless twice a month is needed. Some
months may require one meeting; some may require two meetings.

3. The Institute will begin meeting in January; Institute meetings and research will take place during the spring,
summer and fall semesters. Research will be carried out in the following calendar year and findings presented
the ensuing spring semester.

4. The Institute will have a list of suggested training experiences, and the faculty will have a choice in which
experiences they will complete with the approval of the Mastery of Teaching Institute.

5. Faculty participants will take turns presenting at the monthly meetings on their most recent research results.

e. Designing an Effective Syllabus

f. Technical Literacy for Effective Instructors

h. Learning Styles and Strategies

i. Effective Lesson Planning

Guidelines

1. It is expected that participants will attend all of the scheduled group meetings and participate in suggested training
sessions.
2. Participants will receive up to 36 hours of Professional Development when they complete the Institute.
3. The Faculty Academy will provide up to $2000 in travel/research support* for each participant during the Institute
timeframe.
4. Faculty participants wishing to develop and disseminate surveys will follow Institutional Research guidelines and must
receive IRB approval.
5. Participants must adhere to TCCs Copyright policy.








*Travel Funds must be to attend conferences or opportunities directly related to the research topic. These funds are in addition to any Faculty
Fellowship funds which the participant may apply for and receive. Research support cannot be used to purchase hardware such as computers,
mobile devices, recorders, or any other such items. It can be used to purchase print materials, subscriptions, focus group supplies/food, and other
such items. Before making any research purchases, please check with the Dean of the Faculty Academy for procedures and to assure that materials
to be purchased are eligible for funding.
