Q 1. What qualities have led to BECs success so far?
Answer: The success of BEC can be attributed to a number of factors. The organization has used
segmentation, targeting and positioning strategies in order to diversify the market. For
instance, the company has opened stores in Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada, and US. All the
products sold by the company have been categorized into video games and recorded music.
This offers the consumers variety and choice. BEC is also quick to seize business opportunities.
For instance, BEC has invested heavily in information systems like the venture in online
marketing. SO, the qualities of the BECs that led to their success are the good management
and the teamwork of all the employees in the company that make their products competitive
with the others.

Q 2. Is the IS organization at BEC poised to undertake significant systems development in the
near future?
Answer: Yes, because as the BEC company grew the more need of computer-based information
system for broadways. They to have their own information staff so they will not hire anymore
for other contractor.

Q 3. What specific management skills do systems analysts at BEC need?
Answer: The specific management skills that system analysts at BEC need is the Project
Management Approach, the ability to assist people in making transition to new system or to
deal with technical issues related to change. And the Risk Management, the ability to anticipate
what might go wrong in a project or minimize damage that might result.

Q 4. What specific communication skills do systems analysts at BEC need?
Answer: The specific communication skills that system analysts at BEC need is the Interpersonal
skills the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to each other or a good working
relationship with the clients.


Q 5. What specific areas of organizational knowledge do systems analysts at BEC need beyond
the information provided in this case?
Answer: The specific areas of organizational knowledge that systems analysts at BEC need is the
knowledge of specific functions and procedures of organization and the organizational
strategies. Because there is a greater demand of fast change of technology they are lacking of IS
professionals, basically IS managers and programmers.

Q 6. Why did BEC decide to originally use an outside contractor, Fitzgerald McNally to develop
its first computer application?
Answer: The BEC decided to use an outside contractor to develop its first computer applications
because BEC had nobody trained in information systems on staff and all BEC managers were
quite busy coping with the business expansion. Nigel and Bill realized that computer software
could be quite complicated and building systems for a rapidly changing organization could be
quite a challenge. So they contacted the information consulting firm of Fitzgerald McNally, Inc.
about designing and building a custom computer-based information system for Broadways.

Q 7. What has BEC done to facilitate the global utilization of their application systems?
Answer: BEC used different application systems in their company to provide the costumers
better and more convenient services. And also for the company to be in touch with their other
branches worldwide. BEC has divided its staff into functional area groups for both domestic and
international needs.

Q 8. Do corporate and in-store systems seem to be tightly or loosely related at BEC? Why do
you think this is so?
Answer: Yes, since various batched data transfers occur between corporate and store systems.
And each store has a computer system with POS terminals that run mainly sales and rental
transaction processing application such as product sales and rental, membership and employee
pay activities. Corporate systems are executed on a network of computers of a corporate data
center. Corporate systems handle all accounting, banking, sales and member tracking. And
Market analysis systems depend on transaction data collected by the in-store systems.


Q 9. What challenges and limitations will affect what and how systems are developed in the
future at BEC?
Answer: The challenges that affect BEC is that as the years go on they need to create or use the
modern technologies in their company so their information system will be competitive with the
other company. In limitation they need to expand their both business and technological areas.
