reading short novels from the anthology. Students will also have the opportunity to watch the movie Bullwhip, which is based on the novel By the Great Horn Spoon! during the last week of school. It is interesting to see the differences between the original script and the movie.
Writing We are finishing our studies on our poetry unit, focusing on similes, metaphors, personification, and onomatopoeia. Please keep the writing tools folder as a reference for next year. (A new storage folder is probably necessary. ) We will also learn about idioms as the year comes to a close. Idioms are fun to learn about, but can be difficult especially for English Language Learners. The following links can be helpful to determine an idioms meaning. http://www.idiomconnection.com/ http://eslcafe.com/idioms/
Math We will conclude this year with Unit F: Customary Measurement. At the completion of this unit, we will complete the first six lessons a supplemental unit, Hands On Equations, which takes algebra and makes it concrete through the use of manipulatives. The students are always amazed at the equations they are able to solve.
Science We are working on Chapter 7: Magnetism. Students are reading about Earths magnetic field, magnets, and electric motors. The end of the unit test will consist of multiple choice only.
Social Studies Students are enjoying the study of California as technology and improvements begin to bring faster changes to the state. They will work in a group to complete a collage on transportation, communication, or agriculture.

Teachers Corner It has been a pleasure working with your child this year. Each student has grown socially and academically. With summer just around the corner we are all looking for ways to relax, but it is just as important to keep our minds active. Why not pick a few books to read? Research conducted by Harvard Universitys James Kim shows that even reading 4 or 5 books over the summer helps to prevent the summer slump. Students who dont read much over the summer show a decline in reading performance from the end of one grade to the start of the next. So, avoid the summer slump and READ! http://www.textproject.org/products/summ erreads http://scholastic.com/summer/parents/ http://www.lexile.com/findabook/ http://bookwizard.scholastic.com/tbw/home Page.do
Or, if youre looking for learning activities on the go, check out iTunes U or other app programs. There are so many apps available that offer review of skills and concepts taught this year. Plus, it puts a different spin on learning rather than paper and pencil.
