TURBINE ROLLING

Purpose
To ensure that the turbine does not
experience unwanted stresses
during unit start up
Categorisation
1.Based on temperature
a. Cold start up
b. Hot start up

2. Based on mode of steam admission

a. HP rolling (Bypass off mode)
b. HIP rolling ( Bypass on mode)
Temperature Classification
Cold start up
Rotor temp ( T< 204C) (shutdown > 72
hrs)
Hot start up
a. Warm start up (204C<T<300C) (shutdown
10 to 72hrs)
b. Hot start up (300C<T<400C) (shutdown
< 10 hrs)
c. Very hot start up (T400C)
(shutdown < 1hr)

During rolling
Steam temperature b/w Left & Right RSV < 14C
Steam temperature @ TV inlet should be 50-
100C>FSMT (cold)
Ensure HP seal oil pump is running and diaphragm
pressure is adequate. >0.45MPa
Ensure turbine is reset and it is latched.
Ensure difference between upper and lower casing
temperature of HP & IP cylinder is <41.6 C
DE is <18.98mm and > 1.00mm.
Eccentricity <0.076 mm
While rolling through critical zones vibration is
within 250m

Hot start up
FSMT>204C
MS temperature and R/H temperature
degree of superheat are at least 56C .
Temperature difference b/w FSST and
FSMT is within 38C
Temperature difference b/w R/H ST and
IPBRT is within 38C
HP Rolling (Bypass Off)
Done after bypass is fully closed

After Turbine latch
GV, IV, RSV full open and TV does the speed
controlling from minimum position, HP exhaust
open
Speed is increased upto 600 rpm at 100r/min
ramp
Raise speed to 2040rpm @ 100r/min ramp and
MS should be maintained below 460C and RH
above 260C.
Raise speed to 2950 rpm @ 200r/min ramp
While rolling through the critical zone DEH
increases speed

TV GV IV RSV
At 2600 rpm JOP cuts off and at 2600 rpm LP
cylinder spray comes into service
At 2950 rpm TV-GV transfer is done after
ensuring that the steam chest inner wall
temperature is higher than the saturation
temperature of the MS pressure
Calculation for steam chest metal
temp.(Tc=Ts+1.36(Td-Ts)
Td=SCDLT&SCDRT, Ts=SCSLT&SCSRT
TV gets full opened and GV does the speed
control
Raise speed to 3000 rpm @ 50 r/min ramp
Turn off BOP and HP seal oil pump.

TV GV IV RSV
IP Rolling (Bypass On Mode)
Bypass is kept open and LP Bypass is kept in
auto to control the R/H pressure
After latching GV, RSV opens and TV,IV remains
in minimum position, HXV is open .
Raise speed to 600 rpm and IV valves open to
control speed
Raise speed to 2900 rpm now speed control will
be done by both TV & IV in such a way that the
flow in both turbines remain equal
Raise speed to 2950 rpm , now speed control will
be done by TV . IV opening freezes unless R/H
pressure varies.

TV GV IV RSV
At 2950 rpm do TV-GV transfer after ensuring
steam chest inner wall temperature is more than
the saturation temperature of the corresponding
MS pressure.
Raise the speed to 3000rpm @ 50 r/min ramp
and now GV does the speed control.
IV opening gradually increases. At full open
position close LP bypass valve after closing HP
bypass valves.
Synchronise the unit after ensuring that R/H
pressure is <0.82 MPa and bypass is closed.
HXV closes after 1 min.
10% HP drain, 15% LP spray, 20% IP drain
closes.
