Struggle is commonly known as something that complicates life.

Some
may say that struggle is good for people. It can make people learn from
their struggles and possibly be a better person. Others may believe that
struggle is a negative thing, specifically racism and poverty. Much
research has been done on this topic. This essay will argue how
struggles even in the belief of others hat it is a good, that specific
poverty and racism is, multidimensional and can harm us in many ways.
Struggles are multidimensional. We see this in Breaking Through.
For example one of the struggles Panchito faces is undocumentation.
This struggle causes him to live in constant fear and to be deported.
Some examples from the book that provide evidence of this fear is when
he says, I lived in constant fear for ten long years, from the time I was
four until I was fourteen years old(Jimenez, 3) Another example of his
fear is how he says, From that day on, for the next ten years, while we
traveled from place to place throughout California following the crops
and living in migrant labor camps, I feared being caught by the Border
Patrol(Jimenez,4) The final example if his fear is when he panicked and
felt like running when he saw the migrant in his classroom. As we can
see that being undocumented has brought fear to Panchito and these
for struggle is multidimensional.
Along the line of struggle being multidimensional, we can
also examine its effects (Jimenez, 2). Once again using Breaking
Through Panchito struggles with poverty. Poverty affects
Panchitos education, living conditions, his fathers health, and
how they are being paid a small amount of money for a large
amount of work. There are examples from the book that show
the implications of poverty. One example is how it says, Every
year Roberto and I missed months of school to help papa and
mama work in the fields.(Jimenez, 2) This clearly affects his
education and it is related to poverty as they are helping to make
more money. Another example is on page 2 that they settled in
Bonetti Ranch, in which they lived in Barracks for the past four
years. This connects to their poverty as they can barely afford a
better home. Then there is also the condition of Panchitos
fathers health as in the book it says, Things got worse when
Papa began to have trouble picking crops(Jimenez, 2). Poverty
has an affect on this, as they cant afford to help their father with
the low amount of money. The final example is how in their job
they are being taken advantage from as in the book it says,
Working together all day, Saturday and Sunday Roberto and I
managed to finish an acre, for which we were paid sixteen
dollars. People who want to pay cheap to their workers would
take advantage of people like Roberto and Panchito who really
need the money as they might not argue about the job due to
their high necessity of money for many things that they need
such as food and other necessities.
Education is affected in many negative and this negative
implications can be observed in other sources than the book Breaking
Through .The negative implications of poverty affects many things one
of them being education can be found in other sources other than
Breaking Through. An implication of poverty on education, according to
dosomething.org, 11 facts about education and poverty in America.
Dropout rates of 16 to 24-year-old students who come from low income
families are seven times more likely to drop out than those from families
with higher incomes. This means that people from this range have
reasons why they drop out I would say that one of those reason is
money. Another example of the affects of poverty towards education is
on the website American Graduate it states that, If a student is
hungry, without a home, suffering from untreated aliments, or in need of
glasses, it is difficult for him or her to focus on schoolwork. This is a
great problem as to this is affecting their future at that moment due to
lack of money. Another thing to think about is how according to a study
from U.S Bureau of the Census (2004) that the people from the two
races in most poverty believe that education will help their future and
that learning new skills will benefit them in their job are those who are
poor. The final piece of information about this subject is put in this essay
is abut how Kathleen Blanco said, Every educated person has a job
and a way out of poverty so education is a fundamental solution to
poverty.(IZ Quotes, Kathleen Blanco Quotes) From what is written
down on this paragraph we can observe that poverty has many
negatives affects on peoples education and that the people who make
up most of the poverty population are the ones who most believe that
learning more skills will help them in their life. From this paragraph we
can reflect that there are many negative effects of poverty on the
education of many people and can like we all know find more about this
throughout other sources than the book Breaking Through.
As in the book Breaking Through we can see that poverty
doesnt just affect some ones education it also affects peoples
living conditions. According to Wikipedia, Twenty-seven percent
of the poor live in families that report two or more of the
following: evicting in the past year crowding (more than one
person per room), having moderate or severe housing upkeep
problems, having gas or electricity turned off in the past year,
having the phone disconnected in the past year, not having
enough food in the past four months, living without a refrigerator,
living without a stove, and living without a telephone. Only 3
percent of the non-poor report two or more of these events.
Other than this from another source that says, Seventy-one
percent of the expenditures of the families of poor individuals are
for food, shelter, utilities, and apparel, compared to 46 percent
for the families of the non-poor. For those in poor single-parent
families, the share spent on these necessities is 80 percent. The
final piece of information I will mention in this paragraph is from
Determinant of Poverty And Living Conditions is that it says,
Poverty is a multi-faceted phenomenon which affects not only
the ability to purchase goods, but also vulnerability towards
various pressures that may prohibit an individual from enjoying
life. This vulnerability may be gauged from living conditions such
as employment, health, education, and housing. It is important to
monitor gender differences in poverty, vulnerability and living
conditions, and also to understand the causes of these
differences, in order to prepare strategies for more efficient
intervention schemes aimed at poverty reduction. From this we
can see that poverty has some effects in the living conditions
with the poor.
With the lack of money to buy medicine and healthy foods health
is another one of the things in life that is affected by poverty. From
brainqoutes.com Tom Colicchio said, This is what people dont
understand: obesity is a symptom of poverty. Its not a lifestyle choice
where people are just eating and not exercising. Its because kids - and
this is the problem with school lunch right now - are getting sugar, fat,
empty calories - lots of calories - but no nutrition. With this foods being
given obesity is clearly a problem. Another example of the connection
between poverty and health` is how on healthpovertyaction.com it says,
Poverty and poor health worldwide are inextricably linked. The causes
of poor health for million globally are rooted in political, social and
economic injustices. Poverty is both a cause and a consequence of
poor health. Poverty increases the chances of poor health. Poor health
in turn laps communities in poverty. Infectious and neglected tropical
diseases kill and weaken millions of poor and vulnerable people each
year. Well we can clearly see the implications of poverty on heath
throughout this giant amount of quoted sentences. So all in all we can
see that there is a connection between poverty and health, but there is
another final reason out of the many you could find if you would take the
time to find them. So from Four Ways Poverty Hurts Americans, which
says, Poverty affects health because of the low income. Also most of
the people that dont have health care are because they cant afford it.
Finally health is affected by poverty due to the fact that poverty prevents
people from buying healthy food, and not having healthy food prevents
health issues. Food is a big part of the health and it isnt cheep putting
in healthy meals especially to a whole family.
The next and final thing that will be mentioned in this essay is how
poverty has a negative implication on the treatment of people As to
washingtonpost.com, Straus, Valene said, Poor people are lazy. They
dont care about education. Theyre alcoholic and drug abusers. They
dont want work. Some people treat people that are in poverty like
theyre alcoholic and drug abusers. But why do they do this? Because
mostly every person in this world who seen a person who is in poverty
they think that they have spent all their money on drugs, beer, etc. We
have seen many this many times before. People treat people who are in
poverty like freaks, for example have you ever saw a person who sees a
homeless person and stares at them and points at them? Well I have
and someone might be doing it right now. We can see that they are
receiving a negative image or a stereotype in this occasion to be more
exact.
Some people say that poverty is a good struggle as it builds up
character and to work hard. Poverty to my own self is just wrong, as it
was a struggle created by other people. This struggle as so many
negative affects in the every day life of people. Such things as
education are affected in negative ways and they say that you must get
an education to have a better life, but how do you do this when you
cant get an education due to money. So to my opinion poverty is not a
good thing in any way it just brings many struggles and is hard to get
out of. All in all I disagree with who ever says that poverty is a good
thing.
We all know that poverty isnt the only struggle in the world also
racism is a struggle that many people go trough and it is as damaging
as poverty. Racism as to the dictionary is defined as he belief that all
the members of a race have the same qualities and characteristics that
are specific to that race. This is many times used to chart people as a
The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or
abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or
superior to another race or races. This can have people being treated
differently mostly as lowers. With the negative situation and it affecting
all type of things this can turn to a great problem just like poverty.
There is also some examples of racism in the book Breaking
Through. In the chapter Broken Heart it shows an example of racism
which is how right after Roberto mentioned to Susans parents they turn
less friendly towards Roberto. Other than being less friendly they also
turned uncomfortable and try to make Susan to stop seeing Roberto
even bribing her and it all happened just because Roberto said he was
Mexican. Another example of racism in this book is from the chapter
Stepping Out in which Peggy a friend of Panchito introduces her parents
to Panchito. They quickly ask him where he is from which he answers
Colton California and that he was Mexican soon after it went silent like
with Roberto and in his way turned upset after that day as well Peggy
stopped talking and being with Panchito after this acurance. Finally in
the chapter becoming a saint Panchito is stereotyped as they instantly
advice him at school his counselor to join a farming or carpeting class
as if that is all he is good for just based on his race. In conclusion to this
paragraph there is some examples of racism in the book Breaking
Through
The movie, 42, based on Jackie Robinson shows varies examples
of racism and its implications. One example of this is when a couch from
another team keeps calling Jackie Robinson names and only after a
long while one of his teammates stands up for him. This person sais
that the only reason that he stood up for him was because he was his
teammate. This eventually makes him lonely as no one wants to be with
him from his team because he is a colored person. Another example of
racism is how he is hated by a great amount of white people for being
the baseball league for white players. This is in segregation as to divide
the colored people to the white just because the white believe they are
superior to the colored people. This causes people from the white ledge
to try to unencourage Jackie such as an umpire who called a play as
Jackie being out when he was safe just because he doesnt want any
black people to play on the white men league to unencurage him so he
leaves. These are some of the examples and implications n the movie
42 on racism and there are many more examples.
Kelly McGonigal has a contrast perspective to all that I have said
to you throughout this essay. She Talks about this in her presentation at
Ted Talk, which was named How to make stress your friend. She
argues that stress is your friend because according to research
experiment people who didnt believe that stress was harmful to them
didnt appear to have any increase in death rate while who believed that
stress was harmful to them had increased death rate even with a little
bit of stress. Another thing she mentions is about oxytocin which is a
hormone that makes us reach out for others and is released when we
are in stress and in our everyday life this makes us more social and to
seek help. Also according to another research done as she claims that
from this experiment people who had stress had an increased death risk
of up to 30%, but people who cared for other had no death increase by
stress. This is surprising research results, but stress is created by many
things and what caused the stress such as rich people stress or the
stress that people going through racism or poverty go through. She said
that people who care about others and socialize have less affect of
stress, but people who go through stress from racism are left out by
others so to socialize is not an option to help them from stress. As
poverty is a problem that constantly is active in a persons life whene in
low money income compare to the need of money.
Poverty as well as racism has many negative implications in the
life of people. People such as Panchito have lived through the
implications of poverty we can see from the book Breaking Through the
tough setuations and lifestyle he had due to poverty. Other people go
through this negetive implications every day due to poverty people are
being treated in sertain ways, people cant pay for education or dropout,
people are not having proper homes and can not be totally healthy. This
people are going through this struggles for a man made problem of
poverty, the problem of poverty isnt an actual problem it was created by
us humans and it is our problem to resolve to make this world into a
better place for us all. The first step to helping others is to know their
setuation and hopfully this could have made you relize the setuation of
the people in racism or in poverty.
