Escape the Volcano Game.

Recess Lesson Plan 2

Age Group: First Grade

Time Limit: At least 20 minutes depending on class size and time available during the day.

Objectives and Learning Outcomes:
1): The children will be working on how to communicate and complete a task as a group.
2): The children will be working on their counting and number skills.
3): The children will also practicing some of their gross motor skills, such as;
Jumping, dancing, walking, throwing a ball back and forth, crab walking, frog jumping,
standing on one leg, etc.

Movement Skills: As the children partake in this lesson they will have to learn space awareness.
This lesson plan is based on if there is a rainy day and all you have is your classroom to keep the
children occupied, but still getting up and moving. Space awareness is important when you have
to stay in a classroom, you must make the children aware of where the desk will be when they
are participating in the game.
The children will also have to be aware of their body movements. Since we are indoors
the children will learn how to move their body in smaller ways so that they dont run into other
children or other objects.
The movement skills that the children will be going over and using is jumping, skipping,
and hopping on one leg.

Organization of a group: The children will be separated into teams of two. Even though they
are separate they all have to work together to escape the volcano and get everyone back safely to
the classroom. The reason I want them in groups of two is so that they arent all running into
each other and they will have the opportunity to work on patience and waiting their turn. On the
other hand I want them to help each other as they go so that it isnt a competition, no one is
complete until everyone is safe at the end.

Instructions:
Recess Lesson Plan 3

Set Up Instructions:
1) Move the desk to the side of the room to create enough space for the children to
participate and not run into each other.
2) Lay out the game pieces and tape them to the floor. Lay out life size dice.
3) Separate the children into groups of two, by pulling names out of a hat to make it
fair.

Game Instructions:
1) Each group will take turns rolling the dice.
2) Depending on what number is rolled, is how many spaces the group moves.
3) The first time they roll they walk to the spot.
4) Once at the spot they do what the game piece says. For example they have to do 10
jumping jacks, or hop on one leg 10 times.
5) Once the first group has gone the next group goes.
6) If a group gets to a space where they have to answer a question and they dont know
the answer they can ask the other groups for help.
7) They work together until everyone has escaped the volcano and made it safely back to
the classroom at the end.

Learning Outcomes have been met: To know that the learning objectives have been met is to
ask the children at the end if they learned anything, and see if they learned how to work together
as a unit but also have fun at the same time.

Variations: This game can be changed to add or decrease difficulty based on age group. You
can make the physical activities harder or longer and you can change the question spots based on
what you are learning at the time.
