4. Anticipatory Set:
a. Introduction: My hope with this unit is that you will see poetry in a different
light than you saw it to start with I know you might not all love it, and I am not
asking you to. I am asking you to give it a try and try something new, since this is
a poem most of you have never written before.
b. Poetry does not have to be all butterflies and bunnies sometimes its pretty
darn sad and sometimes its really honest. The more honest the poem, the
better it is in my opinion. Mr. T loves funny poems.
c. Poetry can
i. Inspire people while painting images
ii. Give advice
iii. Help us to see the world
d. ****You arent writing these poems for meso who are you writing them for?!
5. Instruction:

you didnt grow up here in CO? ***share out for candy
b. Input: Explain I am From poems with Prezi
i. How does knowing where you are form help you to know where you are
going?
ii. Every activity we have done in this unit so far has theoretically built on
the other activities to help you have material to help you write this
poem
c. Workshop Model: Drafting
i. Read example poem from Mrs. Wolff
1. What does this tell you about Mrs. Wolff? How do you know?
2. Why would she write a poem about these things?
3. If knowing where youre from helps you know where youre going,
where do you think Mrs. Wolff might be going in her life? How do
you know?
ii. Read example poem from Ms. Geier
1. What does this tell you about me? How do you know?
2. Why would I write a poem about these things?
3. If knowing where youre from helps you know where youre going,
where do you think I might be going in my life? How do you know?
iii. Drafting
1. Students have work time to start drafting their poem, bringing
elements from their lists into their poems
2. Students can use a template to make this process easier
(differentiation)
6. Closure:
a. How does knowing where youre from help you to know where youre going?

Differentiation:
To modify: Students on an IEP can have extra time to complete their draft using the template to
help them. Students on an IEP will benefit greatly from the template. These students also only
need to produce a poem with 4 stanzas.
To extend: Students on an ALP can only receive a 3 if they follow the template. They can extend
their learning by producing a poem that is more unique to their own style and personality.
