a. Input: Review vocab terms: tone, mood, Extended metaphor: metaphor
extended, Implied metaphor, simile, imagery, memoir, stanza, hyperbole,
onomatopoeia, alliteration

word. It could be the metaphorical or figurative meaning of a word; it
could be the emotions connected to a word for a reader or writer

b. Gradual Release: 7 Step Making Meaning Protocol (45 min.)
i. Model (I do, You watch) Analysis for Skylight Man, following all 7 steps.
Students watch the first 3 steps, then help me fill out the next 2, then fill
out the final 2 steps on their own.
ii. Partners (You do, I help) for next analysis students choose which poem
to analyze with a partner.
iii. Self (Workshop Model) (You Do, I watch) Students analyze the last poem
on their own, following the 7 steps.
6. Closure (5 min.)
a. How did the 7 steps help you to analyze a poem? What step was the most
helpful in making meaning of this poem?




Differentiation:
To modify: Students on IEP only need to finish analyzing one poem with group or on their own.
It is important for them to practice following the 7 steps while analyzing a poem.
To extend: Students on ALP can practice analyzing these poems on their own.
