Director & Organization
Jennifer Siebel Newsom wrote, directed, and
produced the 2011 Sundance (Film Festival)
documentary Miss Representation.
Newsom was motivated to create this documentary
to shows the viewers how the medias
misrepresentation of women contribute to the
underrepresentation of women in positions of
power and influence. The documentary had a
great response that led Newson to launch
MissRepresentation.org, a call to action campaign
and media organization. In late 2013,
Missrepresentation.org became The Representation
Project.
Newsoms purpose was to expose injustices created
by gender stereotypes and the sexism cultural we
live in now.

Audience
The audience is young students (K-12 and University) because nowadays,
boys and girls are affected by the images that are being portrayed in the
media.
In particularly the ways media affect women and girls ability to see
themselves as leaders and be seen as leaders by others in society.
Men drive the society and the documentary is mainly directed towards
men because they are the ones who oppress women because we live in a
sexism cultural.
35 women
have served as
US governors
compared to
2,319 men.

Larger Conversation
Nowadays, we live in a society that is driven by men and a sexist culture.
The documentary is used to expose injustice created by gender
stereotypes and to shift peoples consciousness towards change. It
challenges the status quo of individuals to transform cultures so
everyone, regardless of gender, race, class, age, or circumstance can
fulfill their potential.

Analyze the Tactics
Used in the Text/Video
What is the main claim or argument?
This is sending a dangerous message to
young people about women and their
body ( Representation). The media is
decorative toward women and makes
them insecure about themselves.

53% of 13-year-old
girls are unhappy
with their bodies.
That number
increases to 78%
by age 17.
The number of
cosmetic surgical
procedures
performed on youth
under age 19 more
than tripled from
1997 to 2007.

Because the argument is
presented in video form,
what expectations might
the audience have about
how it is presented?
The audience might feel
it's inappropriate to show.

appeals are used?
The type of
persuasion

Tone and
Style
The style is definitely
declamatory. All of these
womens feelings towards being
looked at as something for
cooking, cleaning, and sex is
almost forcibly expressed
throughout the video.

Conclusion
YOUNG MALE PERSPECTIVE
Makes the viewer think about all things wrong with the media and how
women are portrayed, but does not make them want to continue to
listen/watch it.
They come off a bit too strong and have a tacky ending. Only bad points
were made in the video.

YOUNG WOMAN PERSPECTIVE
The video was well put together, but the blame was centered in the
wrong place.
The origins were the generations before us. The ones that demanded
women in a traditional way.
