Meeting/Date/Time Activity Reflective Narrative Email communication Discussed what we wanted to do and learn about. Planned rest of meetings and agreed on a book. Came up with meeting dates and decided upon a topic of interest. Meeting 1: March 19th Discussed Article We discussed article about ELL education in Kansas, and how that population is no longer a minority but rather a very large part of the schools culture. Meeting 2: April 9th Discussed Chapter 3 We talked about the background that ELL students come from and how it is important for a teacher to know it. When a teacher knows the students background, they can connect what they are teaching to the student and make it personal. Meeting 3: April 23rd Discussed Chapter 5 Today we talked about strategies. Chapter 5 was about SIOPs Features. It scaffolded lessons for the readers and discussed how students learn best. For example Cognitive Learning Strategies and Language Learning Strategies. ELL students may know the strategies but not in the English language. Meeting 4: April 30th Field Trip Our PLC went to Fultondale Elementary to observe the ELL teacher. The teacher had three students in her class, two from Mexico and one from Guatemala. She worked with them as a small group and with one independently.
