Social Studies (6.) Identify causes and consequences of World
War II and reasons for the United States' entry into the war.


Learning Objective(s): When given photographs and a Venn diagram, students will compare
Pearl Harbor and the 9/11 attacks to make conclusions about the causes of conflict according to a
teacher made rubric.

Learning Objective(s) stated in kid-friendly language: Today class we are going to look at
how an attack on Pearl Harbor caused the US to enter a world war.


Evaluation of Learning Objective(s): The students will be given a Venn Diagram and will be
required to compare photos of Pearl Harbor and 9/11 as well as connect the photos to the concept
of conflict.

Engagement: The teacher will open with a reminder of what conflict is and begin a conversation
about how conflicts begin.

Good morning class. Can you all tell me what our big idea for the week is? Yes we are still
talking about conflict. So yesterday we talked about the different kinds of conflicts that can take
place. Rosa, please tell us what the three types of conflict are. Yes the three types are personal,
local or domestic, and global or worldwide. Which conflict are we most likely to experience on a
day-to-day basis? (Personal). Now we are going to start looking at the beginning of WWII today
and using that compare and contrasting skill but first, I thought we could do a bit of acting. I will
draw four names from the jar for this little scenario. If I call your name please come to the front.
(Jessie, Mark, James, Jarrell)

The teacher will have four students come to the front of the class and will have them act out the
scenario as he describes it.

Ok Jessie and Mark, lets say that Mark is friends with James, come on up here James. So Mark
and James are friends and they see that Jessie is friends with Jarrell, come on up. So lets
pretend that James is really a big bully and keeps pushing Jarrell down when he rides his bikes
past his house. (The students will act out the scene as the teacher speaks. He will pause from the
story and give them a few seconds to act each scene out). Jarrell asks Jessie to help him out with
his problem but Jessie doesnt want to get pushed down too since it is not happening to him so he
simply offers Jarrell advice and plays with him after he makes it home from school.
So lets pause there for a second and think about what has happened. Has Jessie been in conflict
with anyone yet? No, not yet. What about Jarrell? What do you think Jessie should do as a
friend? Do you think that he has done the right thing by staying out of it? Lets continue and find
out what happens to our friends Jessie and Jarrell.

Well James has heard that Jarrell is friends with Jessie and that Jessie lives close to his friend
Mark. James is not happy that Jessie is playing with James so he tells his friend Mark to knock
Jessie over the next time he sees him. Now there are two bullies attacking our friends. Jessie and
Jarrell get together and decide to ride their bikes together from now on and to stand up to either
bully the next time that they see them. Now was their conflict in this situation? Where was the
conflict Ariel? Yes the conflict would occur when Jessie decided to stand up to the bully the next
time he and Jarrell rode together. Now Jessie, when did the conflict start for you? Werent you
out of the conflict just a minute ago? (Jessie talks about how the conflict started when bully
pushed him down for being friends with Jarrell). Very interesting, thank you all for excellent
acting skills, you may take your seats.

Learning Design:

I. Teaching: The teacher will start by talking about the conflict with the terrorists from 9/11.

Now that we have acted out an example of how some of you might get into a conflict, lets look at
a recent event that caused our country to experience conflict with another nation. How many of
you remember the attack that happened in our country on September 11, 2001? I do not think
any of you are old enough to actually remember it but do you remember hearing anything about
it? Yes, what do you know about the attacks and what happened after the attack. Very good,
suicide pilots that were members of the terrorist group known as al-Qaeda flew into the Twin
Towers in New York City. What do you think of when you hear New York or New York City? (Big
city, Yankees, taxis, vacation, skyscrapers, cold, Elf, Christmas, Times Square, etc.) Yes New
York is normally a very busy city full of millions of people who are all going somewhere. Well
that happy and busy city was in for a grim surprise on that fateful day. The bombers killed many
thousands of Americans and destroyed the towers. Now I would like you all to thank your
parents for giving you permission to watch this short video clip. Please take out your writing
journals and set them on your desks. We are going to watch the news from September 11
th
, 2001.
This is a very sad event and I want you all to be respectful to your classmates and to those lost to
this tragedy by being quiet and attentive during this clip.

The teacher will have handed out a permission slip the week before asking for permission from
the parents to allow their students to watch video clips throughout the week that may have some
disturbing images. The teacher will start the video and remain silent as the students watch the
clip.

What did you see here? What happened and why? What were the reporters saying? What did this
clip make your feel like? Take five minutes and write in your journals. Answer the questions I
posed and feel free to write any other thoughts or questions you have on this video.

The teacher will walk around and read some of the entries until the time is up.

Now I know this is a lot but I have another short clip for you to watch. What do you think of
when you hear Hawaii? (beach, fun, vacation, sunny, volcano, luau, Lilo and Stich, waves). Yes
that is what I think of too when I hear or see Hawaii, a happy place to go and enjoy the beach
with your family. Well did you know that there was a Navy base in Hawaii back in the 1940s
called Pearl Harbor? How many of you have heard of Pearl Harbor? Yes it is very famous. I
want you to think of the Hawaii that you described to me and now watch what happened to Pearl
Harbor in this clip.

The teacher will play the clip and give direction similar to the first clip as he hands out two Venn
diagrams to each student.

Now take another five minutes and journal on this video you just watched. Answer the same
questions from the first video. What did you see here? What happened and why? What were the
reporters saying? What did this clip make your feel like? Be sure to include any thoughts you
might have regarding both videos.

The teacher will finish handing out the papers and will instruct the class to look up at the board.

Okay so I have drawn a Venn diagram on the board. What we are going to do is use your journal
entries to fill the chart in. I would like you to follow along with me on one of your Venn
diagrams. So on the left side we should title it 9/11. Okay that sounds like a fitting title. And the
right side? Pearl Harbor. Excellent. Well you all just make this a little too easy dont you? Now
what is the overlapping part in the middle for, Jim? Yes that is where we will write all of the
things that these two have in common. So raise your hands and lets start filling these in.

(Students will talk about how 9/11 happened in 2001, in NYC, was two buildings hit by planes.
They will talk about how Pearl Harbor happened in Hawaii, in the 1940s, was many ships and
buildings attacked by bombers. They will talk about how both included fire, death, attack on US
land, airplanes were used in the attack, and buildings/ships were destroyed).

Outstanding job class, but I have a little insider information that would look really great on your
diagram. Did you know that both of these attacks on our country sparked the outset of a war?
Well it is true, Pearl Harbor marked the start of our involvement in WWII and 9/11 marked the
beginning of the War on Terror in the Middle East. Did you also know that it was the Japanese
who attacked Pearl Harbor and al-Qaida that attacked New York? Well there is a difference for
our diagrams. Great now we have a Venn diagram that will remind us of what these two events
have in common as well as what differences they have. Notice that conflict is a reoccurring
theme in both circles.

The teacher will relate the beginning example with the events at Pearl Harbor.

Now before we continue on, it is important that we make a connection here with our acted
scenario and with history. The world was already at war but the United States had stayed
neutral. What does neutral mean John? Yes that means that we did not pick a side to fight with.
How can we relate this with our scenario? Ah, so Jessie was neutral at first wasnt he? Okay so
the countries of Japan, Italy, and Germany were all allies or friends, and were trying to take
over the world. Germany and Italy were attacking, essentially bullying other countries in Europe
like Poland, Russia, and France. So the US was like Jessie and was helping them out but not
fighting. Well Japan was like Mark in the scenario and made a plan with his friend Germany.
Germany and Japan did not want the US to threaten their chance of winning their war so they
attacked the US before it could choose a side to fight for. This is why Japan attacked Pearl
Harbor and did so because a majority of their Navy was docked in Pearl Harbor. Did you all
know that is what Harbors do? Yes, they are like garages for big ships and battle cruisers. Japan
attacked on December 7, 1941. Well now that the United States had been attacked, it was time to
pick sides, just like Jessie chose to fight with Jarrell. Only the US decided to fight with the UK,
France, and Russia against Japan, Italy, and Germany.


II. Opportunity for Practice: For now I need you to get with your six o clock partner, grab your
Nooks, and find a place in the room to sit together. I have another fun activity for you to practice
this technique of comparing and contrasting. I have added the links for two more short videos to
watch and compare. The first video is the speech given by President Roosevelt after the attack on
Pearl Harbor and the second is the speech that President Bush gave after the attack on the Twin
Towers. Please watch the video with your partner and complete a Venn diagram as a couple. I
will be walking around and if you have any questions please ask me. How are you enjoying this
topic so far? Yea? Pretty cool huh? Well you have twenty minutes to work on this and then we
are going to move on with the next part of our lesson. I do not mind if you talk with your
neighbor just make sure that your conversation is about your work and that you are being aware
of the groups next to you.

The teacher will quietly observe as the class works together to practice their comparing and
contrasting skills.

Great job class, I really love how well you all worked together to complete this task. Please
quietly place your Nooks in their proper place and take a seat. I will continue when everyone is
ready. Now I am sure you all found many items that were both similar and different from each
other and I will surely check those when I take these up but there is one detail that I really
wanted you to take in. Can anyone tell me the biggest similarity that these two speeches have in
common? Yes both of the speakers were the president of the United States at the time but there is
one detail that is so important. Ah Lucy, yes the main detail is that in the speeches, the president
is declaring war. This, my friends, is the whole point of today. Why might this be so important?
Yes it means that people will get hurt and die, what else though, think big. Think about what our
concept is. Yes! These events led to the start of a war, which is really another name for what?
Conflict! Exactly!

III. Assessment: The teacher will provide copies of two photos per student as well as a modified
Venn diagram.

Ok class I know we are down to the last fifteen minutes of class but I have one more thing for you
to do for me. I am handing out a copy of a photo from the attack on Pearl Harbor and a photo
from the attack on the Twin Towers. I am also handing out a Venn diagram but as you can see
this one is a little different. I want you to look at these photos and do what you have practiced
today with the videos. Look for ways in which the photos are similar and look for ways that they
are different. After you have completed the similarities and differences, I want you to write in a
conclusion about how these photos are connected with conflict. I want you to continue writing
your answer on the back of the page if you run out of room on the front. Please take your time
and show me your best work. You will have ten minutes to complete this.


IV. Closure: The teacher will take up the modified Venn diagrams and will allow the students to
pack up for the next class as he closes the day.

Class I want to reiterate how very pleased I am with you on how hard you worked today. How
can we use our new found knowledge to assess conflict that is going on around us? Anne? What
do you think? (Anne will say that she thinks it is a good tool to evaluate whether or not a
situation is similar to another one that she has dealt with and if it is she will know how to handle
it.) Yes that is a great point. Anyone else? Tom? Yes that is correct. By knowing the similarities
and difference between different people, ideas, and actions, we can avoid conflict or at least
work to lessen it. Well that is the bell, I hope you all have a great day and I will see you first
thing tomorrow.

Differentiation Strategies (including plans for individual learners):
Higher Students who find this too easy will write a journal entry telling of the events that
occurred at Stalingrad.
Lower Students who struggle through this will be given a word bank and will fill in the Venn
diagrams and comparisons.
