WISE was Launched in 1996
due to the increase of abuse of
alcohol and over the counter pre-
scriptions by elderly individuals.
Since the WISE program was
created, it has helped reach over
40,000 elderly individuals.
It was created by the New Jersey
Prevention Network and has sev-
eral other programs in other
states.
In 2009, the WISE program was
awarded a National Exemplary
Award for Innovative Substance
Abuse Prevention Programs,
Practices, and Policies by The
National Association of State
Alcohol and Drug Abuse Direc-
tors (NASADAD).

Senior Education
W.I.S.E.
This is a six week program and a
different topic is covered every
week. Each session is 2 3 hours
long.
Who?: senior citizens aged 55 and
up.
What?: designed to help older
adults celebrate healthy aging,
make healthy lifestyle choices and
avoid substance abuse.
When?: June 18July 23, 2014
Where?: Western Watauga Com-
munity Center in Sugar Grove
North Carolina.
Why?: This program is designed to
help them understand the aging
process, understand how to proper-
ly take medications and why they
take this medications and cultural
diversity among their population.
Sessions
Session 1: Understanding the Changes As-
sociated with Aging
Better understanding of the facts and myths
of aging..
Session 2: Aging Sensitivity
Better understanding of the biological changes
associated with aging.
Session 3: Valuing Cultural and Genera-
tional Diversity
Expanded understanding of the concepts of
culture and diversity.
Ses-
sion 4: Medication and the Older Adult
Increased awareness of the prevalence of
medication use among older adults.
Session 5: Addiction, ATOD (Alcohol,
Tobacco and Other Drugs) and the Older
Adult
Expanded knowledge of the effects of ATOD
use and abuse.
Session 6: An Enhanced Quality of Life
Greater familiarity with strategies for main-
taining a healthy lifestyle..
Make healthful lifestyle choices
don't smoke, eat right, practice good
hygiene, and reduce stress in your
life.
Have a positive outlook.
Stay as active as possiblementally
and physically.
Take safety precautions.
See your health care provider regu-
larly and follow his or her recom-
mendations for screening and preven-
tative measures.
Amp your fitness - which will help
you stay clear of chronic disease.
Get your annual flu shot.
Moderate alcohol consumption.
