Phase II: Activating Prior
Knowledge and Clarifying
Goals
Discuss vocab word: ostracize
(to reject or exclude).
Then ask students to make a
list of 5 jobs they considered
primarily for men and 5 jobs
they consider for women.
Perhaps one where one sex
might be ostracized for.
Provide the example of
women in the construction
field. Tell personal story of
going to customers houses
to fix their pool equipment
and how shocked they were
to see a female.

Phase III: Discussion and
Guided Practice
On the board, compile a list
of all the occupations the
students come up with.
Discuss the patterns the
students see in the lists.
(These jobs often reinforce
the notions that women are
caring and should raise
children whereas men are
strong and should be able to
fight well.)
