Name of Book: Sam I Am Level: Kindergarten

1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of
focus did the teacher include in the lesson today?

The teacher talked about Dr. Seuss by using the book Sam I Am. She also talked
about emotions throughout the book. She did this by asking students what emotion that
they thought the character had based on their facial expressions.

2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
The best part of the instruction was the wait time for students to learn. She asked a
question, waited, and then called on a student to answer. This allowed each student to form
their own opinion before they were just given the answer. For example, the teacher asked what
emotion Sam had at a particular part of the story. She then waited until a majority of the class
had their hands up, and then she called on a student to answer. Through the story, the students
became more familiar with identifying character emotions based on pictures.
3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed
something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading)

I was kind of interested to find that many students could read the book along with
the teacher (even with small text). However, because there were so many words per page,
the teacher asked the students to not read with her for this book. It was kind of amazing to
me that so many of her kindergartners were comfortable enough to read along with her
only half way through their first year of school. In addition, the students worked on
comprehension throughout the story. The teacher continuously asked why the character
might have been happy, sad, mad, etc. Because of this, the students were able to understand
the entire story.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment.
How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation.
There was one point in the story where the main character (Sam) was smiling. This was
right after he had tried the green eggs and ham but before the teacher had read his verbal
reaction. Because of this, many of the students werent sure what his opinion of the food was.
The teacher asked the students why Sam was smiling. One student answered, When you are
happy, you smile- he is probably happy. The teacher asked Why is he happy? After a second,
the student answered, Because he liked the green eggs and ham. The student was able to
connect the emotions of the character in the picture to what was happening in the story!
