Energy Efficiency Notes.

Efficiency: Measured by comparison of production with a cost. (Energy, time, and money.)
It would improve or renewable energy and reduce the harmful effect of fossil fuels and nuclear
energy.

Energy Efficiency: Measure of useful energy.
Energy convert, minimal amount of heat returned.

2 law of Thermodynamics: Energy deteriorates over time.
Energy converted from one from to another.
Converted to heat, heat is not usable
Chemical > Mechanical ( + heat)

COMPONENTS:
Input: (matter or/and energy) entering the system.
Throughput: Flow of all components within the system.
Output: leaving the system.

Measure:
% efficiency = (output / input) x 100.

Feedback: Circular process.
Negative: reverses the direction of the flow. Is good.
Positive: Changes the rate of the throughout, but not the direction. Is bad.

High Throughput:
Energy output is low quality.
Large amount of waste and pollution.

Low Throughput: Balance in and output.
Little waste.
Maximized energy efficiency.

Reducing Energy:
84% of all the commercial energy used in the U.S is wasted.
41% waste due to the 2nd law.

Light bulb: 95% is lost as heat.
Combusting engine: 94%
Nuclear plant: 92%
Coal burning plant: 66% waste.

Solution:
Hybrid cars.
Geothermal: heat stored in soil, underground rocks, fluids in the earth.
Dry steam: Water vapor with no water droplets.
Wet steam: mixture of steam and water.
Hot water: trapped in fractured or porous rock.
Wind.
Living roofs.
Strawbale house.
Biomass.

PASSIVE OR ACTIVE SOLAR HEATING.
Adv: Free energy, net energy moderate, easy, very low pollution.
Disva: Need heat system, high cost (active,) unattractive.

Solar Cells: Cost high but expected to fall, convert sleight to electricity.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Use passive solar energy,
Walk, bicycling, transit.
Wash laundry in warm or cold water.
Get energy audit at your house or office.
